“Belive...Bieber....Belieber. Thanks Rivers, you just gave me an idea!”

~ Justin Bieber on Make Believe

Make Believe is the fifth studio album from American rock band Weezer. It was released on May 10, 2005, by Geffen Records. It is the first Weezer album produced by Rick Rubin, who you would know as the guy who was asking Paul McCartney questions in the Hulu Original doco-series McCartney 3,2,1. It is also the first album to have a consistent lineup from the previous album and will continue to do so from this point forward. It was also the album where the band fully became a meme with the song "Beverly Hills".

Background and recording[edit]

Set three years after the events of Maladroit, Rivers Cuomo and the gang emerge in a dessert wasteland. Cake, lollipops, fudge pudding everywhere! The group then have to make believe in themselves, hence the title of the album, to not become overweight; which is revisited in the final track of their next album, the Red Album. The hit single from the album, "Beverly Hills", contains a chord progression stolen borrowed from the Steve Miller Band's "The Joker".

Reception[edit]

The album was loved by food critics, but not so much by the music critics. Robert Christgau gave the album a 2 out of 5, saying "I no longer believe that Rivers Cuomo can make good music." But nobody cares what the critics think....so what did the fans think? Well, simply put, they thought it was "crappy", which it was, but also wasn't.
