Weezer (also known as the The Green Album) is the third studio album and second self-titled album by American rock band Weezer. It was released on May 15, 2001, by Geffen Records. It serves as the second Weezer album produced by Ric Ocasek, who produced their debut album, and is the only Weezer album to feature bassist Mikey Welsh, replacing Matt Sharp.

Background and recording[edit]

With no bassist, the band brings in Welsh to do all the bass parts. At first, the other members just pretended that Mikey was Matt but that didn't seem to work so instead they printed off a picture of Sharp and cut out the eye holes and made a mask out of it for Mikey to wear. This caused problems with Mikey's bass playing so much to the point, Rivers himself just played the bass and guitar parts. With each album having a different "vibe", they ditched the emoness of Pinkerton and went more for a "poppy" feel. The song "Pipe Bomb" got Welsh investigated and arrested by the FBI which is why he left the band after only one album. The infamous quote from Australian Prime Minister Harold Holt;

I'd rather drown than listen to this!

Was used as Evidence B at Mikey's trial. Mikey was found guilty and put on the Terrorist Watch List. He was also imprisoned for the murder of Harold Holt as the Australian Federal Police didn't want a cold case on their hands. Mikey died in his prison cell in 2011. The cause of his death has not been released to the public, but was noted that drugs or prognostication was not a factor.

Reception[edit]

The reception to Green is average. Many claim that all the songs sound the same, while others dispute that with the fact that all ten tracks have different lyrics. Although Rivers also claims that the lyrics in "Hash Pipe" are 'I've got my eyes wide', professional lip-readers have spoken out saying that the lyric is really 'I've got my ass wipe'. To this, Rivers responded by saying "well obviously these so-called 'lip-readers' don't have their eyes wide while reading my lips. Which I might add, is a bit creepy."
