Uncyclopedia Folding@Home Team
Stanford University's Folding@Home project uses distributed computing to analyze the folding of proteins and research their role in many well known diseases, such as Alzheimer's, Mad Cow (BSE), CJD, ALS, Huntington's, Parkinson's disease, and many Cancers and cancer-related syndromes.
I've started a F@H team for Uncyclopedians. All you need to do is run the software in the background. Whatever CPU power you don't need goes to good use, and the software gives the CPU up easily when you need it.

- What exactly has been happening over there? --Nerd42 14:37, 28 Nov 2005 (UTC)
We have the same problem with Wikirejects, believe me. However, we would never intentionally send people over. Still, we may have to keep a link or two if the article is especially relevant. I don't want to sound cold, but part of managing a wiki is dealing with stupid. We empathize, but we cannot delete all mentions of you in articles that may have particular relevance. Here, links are purely incidental, and never intended for trolling. Think of it this way; if someone wanted to troll wikis, they'd end up on yours eventually, regardless of whether we have links up or not. Again, we apologize for your troubles, but we're not trying to incite anything at all.--Sir Flammable KUN 18:06, 28 Nov 2005 (UTC)

Interestingly enough, we just had Oscar Wilde destroyed by the same IP address 24.250.23.170 (Talk • Contribs (del) • Block (rem-lst-all) • Whois • City • Proxy? • WP Edits ) which made the original post here. I'm wondering if the above post about MA is in any way legit now. I mean, complaining about vandals on your site while vandalizing another is at least a little suspicious. 21:44, 30 Nov 2005 (UTC)
- There was some Uncyclopedia-related vandalism at MA - at least once somebody pasted an image of Oscar Wilde into a lot of their articles. I don't know if it extended beyond that. I posted an apology/disclaimer at their Village Dump analogue a few days ago, but after reading "This is not now nor ever will be Uncyclopedia. If you want to screw around with articles, go over there and do it. We won't tolerate it here" on that talk page, I'm wondering whether I should retract it... --—rc (t) 21:54, 30 Nov 2005 (UTC)
- It seems that they don't even know what we do here. Who do they think we are? ED? Anyway, if they send us their rejects, we'll ban them, and the only place for them to go will back to MA. I have to say, comments like that make them seem like assholes. It amazes me how good-natured and level-headed we can be around here sometimes. For a website based on slander, dishonestly, insanity and lies, we lack a good deal of the stupid assholeism which one would expect to find here. Colonizations!
I am sure people are thoroughly fed up with me saying this, but the new colonizations are up this week. Ill be honest, I was a little dissapointed with the lack of... collaboration going on in the last few, and I hope this time it will be a bit more of a group effort. There is somewhat of a Yugoslavian theme going this time. Slobodan Milošević is the Biography of the week, we all know what he did. Croatia is the Geography colonization, and we all know this country was the only good country in the Yugoslav wars. which happens to be the History Colonization. In this war, people used Staple guns- or not, but this is the Mundane Object Colonization. And Immune system is the Science Colonization. On the use of Template:MTUsign
I've been seeing this template pop up all over the place in the past few weeks, and frankly most of the time its use simply isn't appropriate. Undictionary is not for useless stubs, it's for dictionary entries, and we really need to stop confusing the two. With that in mind, I've created a new template to replace MTUsign in these cases: Template:NRV.
I would ask that admins start using this template by default instead of MTU, and only use MTU when it's really appropriate. --Algorithm 06:31, 24 Nov 2005 (UTC)
- My main problem with that is, someone may edit a page just to remove that type of notice (and we can't watch every single edit for that). With MTU it looks mostly innocent, and 7 days later we can just huff it if no one has expanded the page (or put up a construction/wip tag) and an even lower rate of being moved to undictionary. It has a low rate of edit-only-for-tag-removal). And really, anything I see not worthy of giving a week I delete on the spot, eg:
- Adventures of Laura and Sophie content was: 'Laura and Sophie met at Bingo. They declared that they would have a series of eventful adventures to celebrate life and their friendship.'
- Possiby the problem is that most of undictionary sucks, so for me, anything that isn't instahuffable fits in there too well. I think Undictionary needs to be purged and funny-fied first, no? --Splaka 06:41, 24 Nov 2005 (UTC)
- If template deletion is a serious issue, then perhaps we should create a new VFD page to monitor these sort of pages as well. In any case, the use of MTU really isn't called for (though I agree with you about the purging). --Algorithm 07:11, 24 Nov 2005 (UTC)
I think the message ought to be "has potential but needs work or else you will die within seven days" more often yeah. Lotsa stuff gets deleted without thought around here, as if just because it's crappy now means it'll be crappy forever. On a wiki stuff has to have time to mature, you know? --Nerd42 17:05, 24 Nov 2005 (UTC)
- Then by all means expand on EVERY new article that comes in here. While I agree that certain articles have humor potential, only an idiot would think that the majority (66-75%) of new articles are not pure, huffable crap.--Sir Flammable KUN 18:19, 28 Nov 2005 (UTC)
Timestamp categorization
I do have a thought though. Can we have different categories for Worthless Articles, depending on what week they are put up? It can be done easily, eg: . This will put articles tagged this week into and they will stay there unless they are edited again (really, you have to edit or null edit a page to get a template category refreshed, it is hard-cached). That way, after two weeks, we can go back two weeks and delete everything in that category (eg, anything that hasn't been edited or had the tag removed, will be in ). IN this manner, we should never have more than 3 of these categories filled at any time (and we don't need to create them to view what exists in them, just go to the red linked edit page, and click the [category] button. I wanted to try this with MTU, but it is way too overused. This would be the perfect test of this method of timestamping. Alternately we could give them a month with CURRENTMONTHNAME and have only 12 max. Thoughts? --Splaka 06:51, 24 Nov 2005 (UTC)
- There's no need for multiple categories, just use a timestamp for the category link's sort key (for example, ). I'd like to test this a bit before implementing it, though. --Algorithm 07:11, 24 Nov 2005 (UTC)
- I think Elvis (or EvilZak, someone with an E) tested that with MTU. The problem is you can only do 10 of those (for the numbers), so it would only be practical for CURRENTMONTHNAME or possibly the variable that shows the current day of the week (but that would have to be upkept daily). I *think*. --Splaka 07:16, 24 Nov 2005 (UTC)
- Assuming it works, I think CURRENTDOW would be best, as it returns a number 0-6 (so no Tuesday/Thursday business). I'm testing it now. --Algorithm 07:31, 24 Nov 2005 (UTC)
- Well, it's fragile, but it seems to work. I'm adding the functionality to NRV. Note that if the page is edited IN ANY WAY then the category listing will be updated (this could be good or bad). --Algorithm 07:55, 24 Nov 2005 (UTC)
- True, but that is kind of the point--> Any that are unedited for more than a week = huff. Although I don't know about DOTW though. We'd have to limit it to 6 days, and then if we skipped one day, we'd have to check each page's last edited date at the bottom, rather than insta-huff. Tangent -> I had another thought on IRC the other day, btw. Sort of the opposite of this: . That category tag would break whenever the page was edited (it is possible but annoying to insert ~~~~~ without using the nowiki tags, involves hacking your sig). Random. --Splaka 08:02, 24 Nov 2005 (UTC)
- Heh, most of my ideas involved not creating a zillion templates (and categories are transient). How about this. You have 54 weeks in a year, using CURRENTWEEK. How about making 54 templates Template:Week/## where ## is a number 1 to 54. In each template you have a letter A-Z and a zero in series, repeated twice (eg, Template:Week/0 contains A Template:Week/53 contains Z). Then, you use them thusly: . This would sort them into the category in a different letter each week, and take 6 months to start overlapping, and only require 54 templates and *one* category. A simple chart in the category could tell the admin when the listed pages were more than a week old. --Splaka 09:12, 24 Nov 2005 (UTC) PS Another thought is to do it on days of the month using 0-9,A-Z, looping back would take one month. --Splaka 09:17, 24 Nov 2005 (UTC)
- Great minds think alike, I guess. Template:Mod10/0 through Template:Mod10/53 have all been created and protected. I went with the more generic mod10 approach so that they could possibly be useful in other places as well. --Algorithm 09:23, 24 Nov 2005 (UTC)
- So it loops in 10 days? Still sounds like too short a time. --Splaka 09:31, 24 Nov 2005 (UTC)
- No, it loops in ten weeks (except across New Year's, when it jumps from 2 to 0, but that's still a 3-week gap). Should be completely suitable. (And if it isn't, I'm not editing 54 templates again.) --Algorithm 09:35, 24 Nov 2005 (UTC)
- Oh, that sounds good actually. Hmm, I think there is a way to do it all in one template actually. Trying to figure it out. See Template:Canned. --Splaka 09:39, 24 Nov 2005 (UTC)
- Wow, thanks for showing me that; I had no idea Wiki software could do that. Template:Mod10 has been updated with the new code. --Algorithm 10:14, 24 Nov 2005 (UTC) (trudging off to delete 54 templates)
- Wow, thanks for doing it, I been staring at it for 2 hours getting a headache! Heh. --Splaka 10:17, 24 Nov 2005 (UTC)
If possible (and not too much work), how about a second subset of Mod10 that shows all the digits except the digit generated and one less. Eg, if Mod10 returns 7, it shows "1 2 3 4 5 8 9 0" (for the purpose of having a list of all huffable headings). Or alternately, just the digit two below ("5"). Thoughts? --Splaka 12:00, 24 Nov 2005 (UTC)
- Wow, thanks for doing it, I been staring at it for 2 hours getting a headache! Heh. --Splaka 10:17, 24 Nov 2005 (UTC)
- Followup stuff: We could/should implement this for Template:MTUsign and Template:Qua? if all goes well in this test (after a month test or so). Also Algo, did you delete those 54 unneeded templates yet? ^_^ --Splaka 05:46, 26 Nov 2005 (UTC)
- What about crap and rewrite? - much of what gets tagged rewrite is either never looked at again or regurgitated into something of even lower quality. --Carlb 22:50, 27 Nov 2005 (UTC)
- Both of those can probably go into the same category with timestamping as NRV, yes. Template:Construction and Template:WIP could probably get a new category like 'under construction', and be timestamp categorized in that. --Splaka 00:42, 28 Nov 2005 (UTC)
Possible Blah series?
I've been in the midst of building my own little experimental wiki, just to learn more about the mediawiki software, and since I didn't really have any serious content to put in it, I made an article called "Blah" and then another one called "Blah Blah" and before long I had a whole series of "Blah" pages, which I think are quite amusing to look at because throughout the articles, each paragraph begins with interesting facts about the particular Blah designation, but as soon as the sentence seemed to get at all boring it lapsed into "blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah...." etc until the next heading. A complex family tree and political landscape arose for the Blah Planet. Some Examples:
Blah is a perosn/place/thing all at the same time. Blah Blah is both the mother and the father of Blah at the same time. Blah blah is Blah's evil twin, who eventually joins the military. (the Blah Army) Big Blah = Big Brother The Great Blah = Blah God Blah Clinton is blah blah blah blah scandal blah blah blah scandal scandal blah. George W. Blah takes the Blah States into a war with Osama Blah Laden.
and so on. This became quite amusing after a while ... I built templates linking the articles together, and am thinking of even drawing a map of the Blah States, Californiblah and Blahnada (canada)
Since there are no images associated with the series as of yet, I could import it to Uncyclopedia if the admins like the idea (hopefully including the ones who disliked my last series idea) quite easily. Otherwise, on my own 1-person experimental wiki it stays.
It would be a vast improvement over the current Blah though. I want to see if the idea is liked before doing anything though, because I don't want to waste the effort of posting it only to have it reverted / deleted. --Nerd42 04:30, 24 Nov 2005 (UTC)

Quote Template Smart Quotes
I notice that the quote templates Template:Wilde, Template:Q, Template:Quote, etc. use smart quotes “foo” instead of normal quotes "foo". Smart quotes are rather notorious for being cross-system incompatible and in my case, the close quote appears as a black box. Despite a strong desire to do so, I've held back on replacing all smart quotes with standard ones so far and I'm wondering what other people's opinions on the matter are. --Sir gwax (talk) 00:00, 17 Nov 2005 (UTC)

How do you enter the “smart quotes” from a keyboard? --Paulgb 18:44, 17 Nov 2005 (UTC)
Do not replace the smart quotes! This wiki is using standard Unicode. If you are not seeing the quotes correctly, then the problem is:
- Your browser is configured incorrectly or sucks. Uncyclopedia pages identify themselves as using Unicode encoding.
- Your operating system sucks. Welcome to the Planet Earth. We have many languages spoken here including 中文, Ελληνικά, 日本語, and Русский. Use Unicode. It is the international standard. Use an operating system that correctly does Unicode.
- You have fonts that suck. Get a Unicode font. Some are free!
Solution: Do Unicode. It is the cross-platform standard. That will allow the rest of us to use correct typography. --KP CUN 05:37, 17 Nov 2005 (UTC)

Any image repository for Uncyclopedia?
I know, I know, I know, I'm a newbie and it is a very basic question: I wonder if there is any image repository for uncyclopedia (like wikimedia for wikipedia) where I can easily find suitable images to stuff I write? I've tried to find any, but to tell you the truth, the disinformation policy of uncyclopedia is effectively working against me (here is where you should feel sorry for me if you had a heart). Thankful for help! Regards, Dennis DaMenace. DaMenace 13:57, 19 Nov 2005 (UTC)
- I highly recommend getting new images for articles you write as many images on uncyclopedia are already used somewhere and it's less fun seeing the same image in multiple places. This is sort of tangential, but does anybody else have browser-crashing issues when scrolling down in those image galleries? It doesn't ever seem to happen when I'm seeing images in articles or alone, so I imagine it has something to do with the way the galleries are generated and not the images themselves, but it seems like it would be too exhausting to do any sort of exhaustive experimentation. --Spintherism 23:17, 19 Nov 2005 (UTC)

Actions in Wargames
I was reading through some of the video game wars and personally, I don't much like the whole thing about using <pre> boxes for action quotes, mainly because it indents and puts a box around the whole thing. I find a similar effect can be had by putting the line in a <code>action</code> format and there's no box or indenting. Or a : could be tossed in front to get the indenting. Quite frankly, it's just the boxes that aggravate me. --Sir gwax (talk) 05:24, 18 Nov 2005 (UTC)

linking in Template:Q and Template:Quote
I was looking at Optimus Prime earlier and I noticed that since switching the quotes over to use Template:Q, some of them were no longer linking properly. In tracking the issue back, I noticed that the templates only link the quoter and not the quotee. I'm wondering if there's a reason why the templates use {} and not {}? This has the aggravating side-effect of meaning that if you want to use Template:Q on a page where the subject is saying something about someone else you need to add extra [[s, as in some text --Sir gwax (talk) 22:12, 17 Nov 2005 (UTC)
- Well, I actually do prefer it that way. It has often irritated me on other templates when I have to live with a red link because the quoter is talking about something that isn't, and never will be, an article. This way the person inserting the quote has the flexibility of choosing whether or not to have an article link. -- neoEva88 MUN F@H PS CM NS (talk.to-do)
- I made Template:Q that way on purpose. Mostly because the quotee will be the title of the page, and secondly because if it isn't the quotee often won't exist (as Neo said). However, anyone worth being quoted should have a page about them. Maybe. --Splaka 23:18, 17 Nov 2005 (UTC) PS, Gwax, what were you trying to do with this edit? Why did you change 4 to 3?
- I copied over the format from Template:Q so they would have a unifified look, inserted the |{} and then forgot to change the 3 to a 4. --Sir gwax (talk) 23:40, 17 Nov 2005 (UTC)
Metatizing the Quote Templates
It occurs to me that there are a bunch of different quote templates with a lot of feature/layout overlap. This means that some types of quotes appear differently from others and it means that if we want to change the way quotes are displayed, we have to change it on all of the different quote pages. To this end, I propose the creation of a quote meta-template, which will be called by all of the various quote templates to provide a unified quoting scheme. After the meta-template is constructed, all of the other quote templates can be implemented as calls to the metatemplate. As an example, Template:Wilde can be implemented as {{Q|{}|Oscar Wilde|{}}}. By implementing one master quote meta-template and reimplementing the other quote templates to use it, we could probably eliminate a bunch of redundancy and make style modification easier overall. --Sir gwax (talk) 04:52, 18 Nov 2005 (UTC)

The <link rel="shortcut icon" href="/favicon.ico" /> metatag points to /favicon.ico (which is the normal location), but that url in itself gives a 302 redirect to http://uncyclopedia.wikia.com/images/6/64/Favicon.ico, which FF apparently doesn't chase up for its tab. Can Admins Delete the Main Page
I'm sure it sounds retarded, but I'm really curious if admins are actually capable of deleting the Main Page article. I don't just mean blanking, I mean, can they actually remove it so that it would go in the deletion log and such? --neoEva88 20:16, 13 Nov 2005 (UTC)

- As an irresponsible admin, I feel it is my duty to try to delete the main page. I shall report back shortly. Yes, yes we can. I'll finish restoring all 867 deleted edits now. 21:31, 13 Nov 2005 (UTC)
- Ug, well, I restored all the edits. Just one small problem...only the current version is accessable. The Previous Version states that
- The database did not find the text of a page that it should have found, named "Main Page,oldid=264172".
- This is usually caused by following an outdated diff or history link to a page that has been deleted. <p>If this is not the case, you may have found a bug in the software. Please report this to an administrator, making note of the URL.
- Will mess around with it a little and see if it is a bug, or if I really hozed the previous versions of the main page. 21:50, 13 Nov 2005 (UTC)
Humm...when I restored, the page came back unprotected. This seems to have changed the internal database numbers for the old versions, meaning I couldn't get to them. Re-Protecting the main page fixed it, but only as far back as May 3. Not sure if it was possible to go back that far before I whacked the main page. Can anyone comment on that? It seems that we are fine from current -> May 3, but there's nothing before that that I can access. 22:06, 13 Nov 2005 (UTC)
- Or, it's just a caching problem, because I have found that the previous version is occasionally unavailable to me. Will wait a bit and see if everything shows back up. 22:16, 13 Nov 2005 (UTC)

- As I noticed yesterday, one of WP's meta wikis main page isn't Main_Page, so presumably it makes some kind of sense to them for it to be like any other page? It wasn't a redirect either, seeing as that would show at the top of the page, so they probably hacked the source at some point. Hooloovoo 08:56, 14 Nov 2005 (UTC)

There was a little talk about how we do communications around these parts. So I put up an rss feed on my Geocities space (Which I use to upload crap to the Interwebs) to test things out. Google/IG only shows the title, so right now I have to put my mouse over it to see what the article is. Maybe something like

Babel!
Based on Ouro's Wilde templates, and some suggestions from others, Dawg and I have transwiki'd Wikipedia's language status thingies (well, Dawg did the coding). Since we don't care if they are all in english, he metatized them. There is only one top template for all languages for all levels, eg du gives:
Adding a new language requires only one template (eg Template:LangName_en), and then anyone can use it. Adding a level is a bit harder requiring three, but with 10 levels currently that should not be required too much (contact Dawg with suggestions if needed). See them all at: Uncyclopedia:Babel. NOTE: The categorization was a bit of a bother, we decided not to have a category for each level multiplied each language, but just one for each language, with the users sorted by level in that category (using parameters), see Category:User_en for example. Comments? --Splaka 11:59, 8 Nov 2005 (UTC)
- Quite a bit of brainwork and fingerwork, but I think the result was worth it. It is certainly easier to change one or two templates rather than ten or twenty.
- I've hacked the Uncyclopedia:Babel page up a bit and I think the list is a bit more wieldy now. It was just too noisy and redundant with all the templates, or too blah with so little formatting. I think I've brought it to a happy medium. 13:23, 8 Nov 2005 (UTC)
- Intéressant. :) I've created a few, including category:User fr populated with whichever names were listed here as des personnes bilingues. One question, though, lz - how does one claim that? No one truly understands women, including other womyn. --Carlb 16:15, 8 Nov 2005 (UTC)

- Is there a "Native speaker of Hilarious" template? --Savethemooses 23:27, 8 Nov 2005 (UTC)
- I'm surprised that there's a "Native speaker of Dumbass" template. Uncyclopedians aren't dumbasses, we're smartasses. ;) --Carlb 03:24, 9 Nov 2005 (UTC)
- Why are you surprised? The templates aren't all hand-made one-by-one. I handmade the original templates and the rest are based off those (the languages are very easy to create). Every language has the same collection of options. 07:29, 16 Nov 2005 (UTC)
- I made the "-F" template -- does anyone like it? --Clorox MUN ONS (diskussion) ☃ 01:27, 15 Nov 2005 (UTC)
