Announce: ED to be removed from Uncyc
The unperson*********** *********never existed and was a fabrication perpetrated by Emmanuel Goldstein. Memories of*********** *********shall be corrected doubleplusgoodwise by Miniluv.
As per grand proposal by the Poo-Bah, all of ED shall be stricken from Uncyc and never to be seen again! Unless, I guess, someone dies, or someone passes a law or something. Let the burning begin! --Sophia 02:09, 16 Aug 2005 (UTC)
- That crimethink template is masterful.

- I just did a search on this Sherrod Degrippo person, and "it"(referring to whoever Sherrod is) is a compulsive abuser of DMCA and has had several sites that abused the DMCA itself. I dunno about you folks, but this person is definately a candidate for reconstructive lobotomy.--Nytrospawn 19:03, 16 Aug 2005 (UTC)
Will there be a EM instead? --Marcos_Malo S7fc BOotS | Talk 22:52, 16 Aug 2005 (UTC)
- I personally don't think we should have the Template:Someone either. No more promotion for them. Let there be a gaping Goatsesque hole where ED once was. --Famine 13:39, 18 Aug 2005 (UTC)
- No idea why template:someone was created as a template - by definition, it's something that would never get used on more than the one article. --Carlb 17:11, 18 Aug 2005 (UTC)
- It's just like the old template (links to the corresponding article to the page it's displayed on).
Proposal
Not a wedding proposal, or I would make this statement on a dating site, or wherever. No, this is a proposal to make Uncyclopedia a better place, where the rabbits hop, and the kittens are never huffed, and this template wouldn't be seen so often.
I was blocked from Uncyclopedia, and all I got was this lousy template! Village Dump/archive3 has been blocked from Uncyclopedia for misconduct. May its sad fate serve as a warning to others.
Make Uncyclopedia better, not worse. Stop the cycle of violins. |
I got that from Gyugy's user page, by the way. The only user to be banned for 24 years. Heh. Heh. Anyhow, my idea is to prevent users from editing other users' user pages. Of course that doesn't include their talk pages, I'm not an idiot. Although I
once committed the obviously n00b act of VFDing Kitten Huffing. I just thought it was insensitive to kittens, that's all. I didn't know that it was the second most important page in Uncyclopedia. Oh well, WHO'S WITH ME?! --Cheeseboi 23:05, 15 Aug 2005 (UTC)
- Guns don't kill people etc. --Spintherism 19:04, 16 Aug 2005 (UTC)
- I don't know that it's possible to protect user pages from everyone except that one user. Under regular protection, only admins can edit pages - so if I protected your user page, you wouldn't be able to make any changes to it. --Rcmurphy KUN 22:07, 18 Aug 2005 (UTC)
Also..
Could someone turn this little musing of mine into a template for featured pages to display? If you hate it, that's fine. I don't know how to create templates.
This article has been featured. The creator will now exercise his right to gloat. Neener neener neener!!! --Cheeseboi 23:05, 15 Aug 2005 (UTC)
- To make templates, just start a page that begins "Template:" - such as Template:FA. Then the command {{FA}} will display the template on other pages. If you're having trouble with the format or whatnot, you can always steal the code from another template. That's what I always do. --Rcmurphy KUN 22:07, 18 Aug 2005 (UTC)
A More Modest Proposal
I suggest that we prevent overpopulation in Ireland by using Irish children as a food source. More details of my modest proposal may be found here and here.

Some statistics
I wanted to see how significantly highlighting articles, images and writers shunts traffic to the featured pages. Some of these figures are kind of...old, but since I collected them (rather haphazardly) I figured I'd put 'em up anyway. Greatest Inventions is the more recent featured article. The image stats refer to the article the featured image box links to, not the image page itself. Woot. --Rcmurphy KUN 20:17, 14 Aug 2005 (UTC)

EDLogo should be covered under fair use so as long as we are using it to refer to ED in an unmodified fashion. The girlvinyl picture should probably be removed since it doesn't carry an official context. --Sophia 02:46, 13 Aug 2005 (UTC)
- As of now, I am removing the girlvinyl picture and disabling the ED template. I do not really like linking to people trying to sue me.--Sophia 04:16, 13 Aug 2005 (UTC)

- Removing those two images could very well bring Uncyclopedia to a screeching halt. Well, it's been nice working with you guys. --Rcmurphy KUN 04:50, 13 Aug 2005 (UTC)
- From the beginning, our "legitimacy" has been based upon the presumption that all of our content is licensed under CC. In theory, nothing but CC stuff should be on the site. Our image collection more or less is an illegitimate exception. While I believe that I could service the DMCA request and fight them in court, I can't exactly see why we link to ED when they clearly are a bunch of hypocrites. Although I could fight it.. exactly what would I accomplish? The right to use their logo... and then.. not use it? --Sophia 20:24, 13 Aug 2005 (UTC)
- Right. It would just be a waste of time and energy without a payoff (except maybe an weakly idealistic one - "We are protectors of free speech," etc. etc.). I saw that you deleted the logo, so now let's put the whole sorry incident behind us. --Rcmurphy KUN 21:42, 13 Aug 2005 (UTC)
- I deleted it currently under DMCA safe harbor.. we're still discussing options with Wikia. Servicing (i.e. courting) the DMCA request is not out of the question.--Sophia 03:48, 14 Aug 2005 (UTC)
- If anyone at Wikia could be bothered to show up to give this its day in court, sure, that would be amusing; all this is alleged to have taken place on a web server in Florida, so demand that she travel all the way from Nevada (at her expense, and it's a long long way away) to state her case before the nice Florida judge... *lol* --Carlb 19:48, 14 Aug 2005 (UTC)

- While that seems legitimate, it also feels kind of overkill. Couldn't they say "We are not cool with that" instead of "We request that you remove the violating content from your website."... Sheesh! Is there an underlying conflict that noobs like me should be aware of or something? Before somebody else does something aggravating? I mean, what's going on?
[EDIT] Just read the Encyclopedia Dramatica article. I think I get the idea and/or motivation. This sucks.--Sunsneezer 05:13, 13 Aug 2005 (UTC)- The words "please remove this" would have been more than enough. A DMCA request is exactly what pisses me off. The original was much longer, it was a formally filed request. --Sophia 20:24, 13 Aug 2005 (UTC)
- The thing is, the ED article is a joke whose counterpart, an Uncyclopedia article on Encyclopediadramatica.com, accuses our site of being "a dumping ground for content that typically does not qualify for inclusion in Encyclopedia Dramatica or even Wikipedia, most often due to an article being unfunny and not even tangentialy connected to Internet drama." Elvis (I think) wrote both articles to play off each other by mocking each site's niche. There's no war going on between us that I know of. At least not yet. --Rcmurphy KUN 05:33, 13 Aug 2005 (UTC)
- Oh. I see. Because I just read the UD article and it gave the impression of a tangible rivalry. Which would be both stupid and plausible, and maybe the result of some casual flamewar gone awry. Glad to hear it
's notwas not the case.--Sunsneezer 05:45, 13 Aug 2005 (UTC)
- No rivalry unless they'd like to create one now (and more likely they're just trolling for drama and lulz, that is their stated mission). Otherwise, wouldn't it be more likely that every link or reference pointing from one site to the other would have been pulled/removed, the Life and Death of a Template-style, long ago as pointless advertisement? Basically the "not a sista project, why should we give them advertising by linking to them?" rationale.
- As for the articles themselves, user:Elvis created both templates (linking from here there, and back from there here) and had used a stub I'd created as the entry for ED here as the basis for the current pair of articles (one on each site identifying (the other) as "dumping ground" for content too trivial to be posted on (site currently being viewed) or "even on Wikipedia". The original stub was merely a placeholder so that the template inviting our readers to look at the corresponding article on the other site wouldn't show a broken link for the description of ED itself. I've seen more rivalry between the color and colour articles on this site. :)
- An attempt to claim to own æ or any other standard Unicode character? A little farfetched... one can't own outright individual letters of the alphabet that've been around since the times of Cæsar. --Carlb 06:17, 13 Aug 2005 (UTC)
- I think they can claim their exact stylized logo, though we can just find the same font and reproduce it. Amusingly, their site appears to have no license at all, so it is unclear how they are publishing. --Sophia 20:25, 13 Aug 2005 (UTC)

But in all reality, there is no copyright protection for a standard symbol. Its like me patenting the word "patent". I swear to you I never made a dime off of that --Nytrospawn 20:48, 13 Aug 2005 (UTC)
I'd expect Cæsar would have prior claim to the symbol (as well as to making a far better salad) but the template itself may well be VFD-worthy here were it treated in the same matter as the Uncyclo template there:
- 05:02, 6 Aug 2005 Aussieintn deleted "User:Elvis/experiment1" (remove spamming tool)
- 04:56, 6 Aug 2005 Aussieintn deleted "Template:Uncyclopedia" (Tell someone who cares.)

Question to Soph Is the C&D from an actual attorney, or is it from Sherrod herself? Did it arrive as a certified letter in the mail or as an email? If from an attorney, did the attorney leave contact information, and did you contact the attorney to ascertain the veracity of all this? I'm thinking that Sherrod has our collective panties in a twist, and she is indeed engaging in her special ability, which is of course Drama. We should counter this with the methods that befit Uncyclopedia. And yes, Soph, you should send out notifications to Slashdot/Groklaw et al. concerning this "threat". If nothing more, it will make a nice little hoax and generate publicity. Also, in any case, you have a perfect legal right to publish the letter. It was sent to you unsolicited, it is newsworthy, and can be published under fair use. Lastly, if this was an e-mail from Sherrod, have you written her back, asking for Clarification, proof that she is indeed the copyright holder, and asking if you can speak with her attorney on this matter? You might remind her that impersonating an attorney is illegal [3]. --Marcos_Malo S7fc BOotS | Talk 23:19, 13 Aug 2005 (UTC)

(added Carlb 17:41, 14 Aug 2005 (UTC)) The copyright status for the image currently in use in Wikipedia:Encyclopædia Dramatica is:

- "C9 Las Vegas April 24-27 2003

An interesting note. While Uncyclopedia uses the Creative Commons License for its articles, Encyclopedia Dramatica has written on their legal disclaimer:
- Each contributor of encyclopediadramatica.com holds full rights and responsibilities for materials they personally publish via this encyclopediadramatica.com web site. By use of this site, you accept and recognize this qualification and indemnify not only the owner of encyclopediadramatica.com but also all other contributors to encyclopediadramatica.com from any legal action.
Encyclopedia Dramatica is not an immature juvenile version of Uncyclopedia. It is organized around a different philosophical principle. As such, I propose we satirize it as much as we can and get as much fair use out of their “logo.” (We can make our own version and call it a logo for Encyclopedia Melodramatica just to be lazy about the legal stuff). The girlvinyl picture is not worth fighting for. --KP CUN 06:16, 14 Aug 2005 (UTC)

Noob Question
How do you upload images?
I happen to upload images very well, thank you. You will upload images very well by talking to your computer in gentle but firm tones, eventually coaxing your computer to send the necessary electrons. Should this fail, you will need to resort to stronger disciplinary measures. Pull on the computer’s choke chain and push gently on the Upload file link listed below toolbox on the navigation bar to the left. Repeat as necessary until your computer learns the correct behavior. Reinforce the correct behavior by giving your computer a treat (such as a slice of Spam) each of the first few times your computer uploads an image properly. --KP 07:45, 11 Aug 2005 (UTC)

Actually, information can be destroyed on a quantum level. For further information, see Quantum information can be negative, What do you know!, or Quantum information can be negative (popular description). The goal of Uncyclopedia should not be to destroy information. It should be to create information that is dangerous and that could lead to possible injury or death. An example of such information is contained in the article Recipe For Disaster. --KP 17:29, 10 Aug 2005 (UTC)

If then... it's going to cost $$$.--Sunsneezer 23:07, 10 Aug 2005 (UTC)
Actually not. Money is quantized, just like electromagnetism and angular momentum. The basic quantum of money is the currençon, which like all matter-energy exhibits particle-wave duality. As long as you don’t look, the currençons flowing through Uncyclopedia will exist in an uncollapsed probabilistic state. As soon as you try to determine a currençon’s position, the probability wave will collapse into either profit or loss. Thus, we have the following sequence:
- Observation.
- ???
- Profit.
How a currençonic wave collapses into profit is not known with our present day knowledge of quantum economics. --KP 05:47, 11 Aug 2005 (UTC)
Quantum Economics eh? Sounds like a good idea for an article --Nytrospawn 16:13, 11 Aug 2005 (UTC)

Unused image gallery
Over at vfd, people are trying to clear away Uncyclopedia's unused images. Right now, it looks like they're going to find homes for some of the articles, and then huff the rest away. There were 278 unused images, some duplicates of other images, others look like they could be very useful. If not for an article that exists now, then for an article someone might write later.
Is it possible to create a gallery for unused images similar to Special:Newimages? It could serve as a nice little library for people who're looking for a spare picture for their article. And in the long run, it'd probably be easier for the admins than deleting a few hundred images every couple of months.
- Here's the gallery of unused images: Uncyclopedia:Pages_for_deletion/unusedimages. Though it's not automatically generated like Special:Newimages. --IMBJR 09:40, 10 Aug 2005 (UTC)
- Sorry, I guess I should have worded it more carefully. I know about that page. I was talking about, as you said, an automatically generated gallery. Otherwise you might have to make a new Uncyclopedia:Pages_for_deletion/unusedimages every few months.
- Not a question of generating this anew "every few months"; Special:Unusedimages tells exactly what's missing from Uncyclopedia:Pages_for_deletion/unusedimages (and only lists what's missing - and just the special unused images, not the boring ordinary ones). Those few thumbnails can then be inserted into the unused image gallery at any time without regenerating the entire page. Not that it couldn't be automated (by using some sort of pywikibot robot script) but are there enough newly-orphaned images to require automation?
- Cleaning out completed entries (thumbnail removal once images are reused or deleted, archiving or removing discussion for completed items) may actually be more of an issue than adding new entries in terms of amount of effort needed. --Carlb 13:54, 10 Aug 2005 (UTC)
- Assuming that all that's needed is a minor change to the Newimages code, that effort goes away.
- It's not just about effort, though. If a homed image ever becomes homeless again, you'd never know. It would already have a home on the Uncyclopedia:Pages_for_deletion/unusedimages page. Further, it'd be a lot friendlier to users who just want to take the pic and leave without having to fill an additional comment to say it's been removed. Instead of going through the massive task of finding new homes for all these images, other users could pick them off over time. They might even write articles with them in mind. The automated gallry would probably also be more compact in layout.
- From what I've seen, that you've both been doing a fantastic job homing images. But I'm sure there's a lot of other crap you have to handle without having to put so much time into this. Especially if a minor script modification's the answer.--220.238.29.245 17:46, 10 Aug 2005 (UTC)
Unused image gallery - A Problem
If someone links to an Uncyclopedia image using the form:
then Special:Unusedimages will not list it as used, as it technically is not used, merely linked to. This is a bit of a bugger, as we may end up throttling images that are linked to.
For an example, see User_talk:Paulgb and look for a link to Image:Tomba!.JPG. The image's page has been amended to warn ppl that the image is in fact used.
The same problem seems to occur if the image is linked to using the : prefix technique too.

Astrology-topic articles
August 9, 2005 Wrom: UFPEGAU
I was looking up astrology-topic articles on astrology on Uncyclopedia this week. I found a cool, relatively well-done general article on astrology located at Signs_of_the_Zodiac. In my humble view, that article should be the main article on Astrology; and in fact, I'd like to re-work and expand it.
Unfortunately, there is a stub-like article on Ronald Reagan astrology with the article title Astrology that's taking up the main heading of [Astrology], thereby preventing [Signs_of_the_Zodiac] from being the main article entitled [Astrology].
As an interested Uncyclopedian, what I would ask is if the Administrators could please do the following for me on behalf of future readers on Uncyclopedia:
(1) Please delete the present Astrology article or re-name that article as something like [Reagan Astrology].
(2) Then, with the [Astrology] space having been freed up, re-name the Signs_of_the_Zodiac as [Astrology]. I can add then add a See Also link to the [Reagan Astrology] article.
If you have any other suggestions, I'm open to them.
Thanks.

- IT HAS BEEN DONE /Godophone. So yeah. Make the necessary adjustments. In retrospect. I should have named it Reagastrology, but I 'll fix that latarz... --Flammable CUN 22:21, 9 Aug 2005 (UTC)
From Ogopogo: Thanks, Godophone. I've made some quick updates to the article now, and will make other changes as I go along. Thanks again.
Abe Simpson Penny
I did this for the Penny article, motivated by the Abe Simpson Article. Couldn't think of anything to replace the LIBERTY and IN GOD WE TRUST bits. I'd like to get suggestions. --Sunsneezer 04:21, 9 Aug 2005 (UTC)

Stupid questions
I realise that this is a stupid question, and I also realise that prefacing a question with "I know this is a stupid question" is also a really stupid thing to do (this could go on), but... Is there any way I can claim entries as my own? I forgot to sign in last time I wrote one and now it's just assigned to my IP address. Or would any option of this sort lead to people being claim any old entry? If so can I please have the two cows one
Andymarr
- Personally, I dont't really "claim" articles, as the good ones constantly evolve. If you really, desperately need to claim your articles, make sure you are logged in when you edit, and click here. If you are just an anon-ip, we hate you, so it doesn't really matter. Again, I'm ok with my penis size, so I don't feel the need to lay claim to vast swathes of articles due to lack of self importance. Of course, I've probably just horribly insulted a couple of admins, but seriously, you should see them in the shower! Er, not that I have, of course, but one hears stories...you know, if you hang around the Dump long enough... --Famine 02:22, 9 Aug 2005 (UTC)

Dammit! I have the worst timing on Earth. Just last night I was putting the finishing touches on a (long) "Forum" article on my Talk Page. I was planning on finishing it up and uploading it today, but apparently some rebellious chat page is squatting there. Don't you think you could move this revolution somewhere else? 3. In addition to rule 1, don't vandalize the village dump.

Fantastic idea. I'm glad I projected that one out to those with more ambition than me... --Famine 21:36, 1 Aug 2005 (UTC)
I reworded the template a little, and broke the text into one more line. I resisted changing the god-awful pinkness which this site seems to love. The stub and this template both make me shudder. --Famine 02:43, 2 Aug 2005 (UTC)
Power structure
It'd be nice if someone could finish/rewrite these articles. They could have some real potential if they actually existed.
You can add the individual articles to the requested pages page. Its at the bottom of the main page--Nytrospawn 00:42, 1 Aug 2005 (UTC)
Really Really Really Good
Anyone really good at drawing? I wanna ask for a special request --Nytrospawn 14:57, 31 Jul 2005 (UTC)
- One of our members at STO.net is, Kinneas. He does a weekly comic. I'm not sure if this is the sort of thing you're looking for? But if it is I'll be happy to run it by him. Hooloovoo 16:17, 31 Jul 2005 (UTC)
- If you ask for your perverted Autobot fetishes, I will indeed need to kill you. --Sophia 21:31, 31 Jul 2005 (UTC)
- Hey, didnt think of that...I mean...I was thinking of haveing an Uncyclopedia admin poster of all of us as anime super heros. But that other thing...hmmmm....--Nytrospawn 00:41, 1 Aug 2005 (UTC)
New system for handling stubs
We have far, far, far too many stub templates. Now we can have like four.
Basically, I've made 2 standardized templates for custom stubs to replace the gajillions of standalone templates we have now.
The relevant pages:
- I have to say I know people have put a lot of work into this but I really don't see the problem with having loads of stubs, I can see that having a random one for generic stubs is fun, but see no reasons to get rid of ones for a particlar area like politics.--Elvis 04:14, 31 Jul 2005 (UTC)
- Well, it's not getting rid of them. It's just standardizing the way they are created to ease database load. --General Specific 04:19, 31 Jul 2005 (UTC)
Monobook modification
Can some administratoru edit the MediaWiki:Monobook.css page to add:
____________text below this line_____________
/* this is to make [[Template:Ref]] appear without the external link arrow */ .plainlinksneverexpand { background: none ! important; padding: 0 ! important; } .plainlinksneverexpand .urlexpansion { display : none ! important; } /* Make sure that ext links displayed within "plainlinksneverexpand" don't get the arrow... */ #bodyContent .plainlinksneverexpand a { background: none !important; padding: 0 !important }
__________________text above this line______________________
This is needed to make the {{ref}} and {{note}} templates correct. --JWSchmidt 05:13, 29 Jul 2005 (UTC)
- I don't really mind the little arrow next to external links. If we implement this, I just know we're going to be cleaning up a lot external links that look just internal ones. We'd get about a million articles a day where people randomly change internal links to goatse, and then ppl will click it because there's no arrow. In short: it's a bad idea imho.--TheLibrarian 06:58, 29 Jul 2005 (UTC)
- Why exactly doesn't the "plainlinks" class fit your needs? I tried changing "plainlinksneverexpand" to "plainlinks" in Template:Ref, and it seems to work fine. --Algorithm 08:47, 29 Jul 2005 (UTC)
- Denied, for reasons above. --Sophia 00:40, 30 Jul 2005 (UTC)
- Thanks, Algorithm. You fixed it. --JWSchmidt 00:59, 30 Jul 2005 (UTC)
Idiot User
I'm not talking about me (smartass), I'm talking about 24.158.32.187 (Talk • Contribs (del) • Block (rem-lst-all) • Whois • City • Proxy? • WP Edits ). This guy seems to be creating a lot of new articles with just one (barely one) line of text. Now what is a young strappin' fella like me supposed to do whith that?--TheLibrarian 23:57, 28 Jul 2005 (UTC)
- Leave a message on his talk page (perhaps point him to Undictonary and/or Uncyclopedia:Uncyclopedia is not a dictionary) in the first instance (and try to persuade him to get an account) if he keeps doing it ask an admin to threaten him with the ban stick, if that still dson't work then request the admin actual bans him would be my course of action.--Elvis 07:50, 29 Jul 2005 (UTC)
- Tell him to follow this link, where he'll find tons of links to hilarious articles. Maybe it will inspire his muse. --Savethemooses 20:09, 29 Jul 2005 (UTC)
This quarter's media roundup
uncyclopedia.wikia.com - Sticking with the theme of useless information comes Uncyclopedia, "The free encyclopedia of politically incorrect non-information." A recent article covered the Teletubbies "also known as the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, and how they led Notre Dame to two football National Championships between 1920 and 1924. The four were all dominant figures in their respective positions in the backfield, crushing each opponent mightily."
There was also a brief on Wal-Mart profits dropping because "bitchy rude cashiers and cocky greeters who act like they're going to make eye contact then suddenly look away and start talking to the cart boy have cut into spring sales and warned that results for the current quarter would miss Wall Street forecasts."
Now that's scary. — Halifax Daily News (May 19, 2005)
READER Robert Tedford points us towards Uncyclopedia, a website of encyclopedia-style articles sent in by contributors, which tells us under the entry for Scotland - "Scotland is to England (aka Britain) what Canada is to the US.
It is as the appendix is to the human body - not strictly necessary but can get inf lamed, causing severe irritation." Quite. — Glasgow Herald (July 19, 2005)
