NEW YORK CITY, New York -- Fifteen years after its cancellation, the long-running NBC sitcom Night Court is coming back in a big way. Series creator Reinhold Weege is currently working on a film adaptation set for a July 2008 release. And the first role has already been cast.
Everybody Hates Raymond, Everybody Tolerates Raymond, and Til Death star Brad Garrett and veteran actor Alan Arkin (Little Miss Sunshine, Lord of the G-Strings) came in to audition for the role of Bull Shannon, but a young lady came in who won Reinhold Weege over -- pop star Britney Spears.
Spears, 25, came in to audition after having shaved her head completely bald for the coveted role. "I almost cast Michael Chiklis from The Shield," Weege said, "but I thought, 'Hey, we've never had a female Bull before. Let's go with it!' and, here we are today."
The pop star, who is also working on a new album, commented that she is a lifelong fan of the TV series, stating, "I used to watch this show all the time when I was a baby. I idolized Bull, and I thought he was the funniest man on earth."
Britney Spears has only appeared in two theatrical movies: The lead role in Eric Clapton's Crossroads and a cameo in Austin Powers in Goldmember on Ice: The Musical: In 3-D, which were both widely panned by critics. She has also appeared on Saturday Night Live many times and guest starred in a 2006 episode of Will & Jack, which won her critical praise.
Richard Moll, who played Bull on the Night Court TV series, and went on a rampage in New Dehli in October, has given Spears his blessing. He says, "I love her music, I think she's hotter than Markie Post, and I know she'll do my old role justice." Moll declined Weege's offer to reprise the role, reasoning that he hates shaving his head bald to play Bull. But Moll says he'll have a cameo. "I have a short cameo with Harry Anderson and John Larroquette in the courtroom."
Little is known about the plot and things are top secret in regards to it. Says Weege, "I could tell you the plot, but then I'd have to kill you."
Britney Spears's casting in the movie came shortly after she supposedly checked into and out of rehab within 24 hours. Manager Larry King calls the rumors "bull. Britney was never in rehab or anything like that. I would like to find whoever spread this story and beat the crap out of them with my bass guitar."
The film is slated for July 4, 2008.
