The true irony of this image, of course, comes from the fact that Nietzsche never cut his own moustache this way; his sister would shave it in this fashion during the last ten years of his life, when he was in a vegetative state. Many of the images we have today of Nietzsche were commissioned by his sister. Although since this photograph recently surfaced many experts have attempted to take this as a self-portrait indicative of Nietzsche's academic frustrations (as supported by the presence of a camera in his hand), the facial hair suggests a later date.
