Forum:Portals, action being taken
OK, I just had to make another, more serious looking topic just in case "Portals Schmortals" gets ignored because of the "wacky title". Not very solid judgement there on my part. Below is what I know is happening now. All who are interested in this portals thingy please leave word of your intentions here.
Who does what
- Silly Angel is on team. Silly Angel, when you know which portal you pick, write it below this comment.
- Mnbvcxz has made Games portal. Mnbvcxz, if you will make others tell us here.
- Orian57 started a Portal on Technology and Computers.
- RabbiTechno said he'll run Art portal, I'll make it with him soon
- I have made Science portal, it's more or less running, help with it if you want to
And of course...
...it makes things easier if all of us discuss all of this in this of all forums. Not brilliant organising on my part not to understand it right away - but you can refer to my comment on my electrics system on Forum:Space rewrite...?
General question about how you would like it...
I suppose an article could stay featured in any given portal for as long as two weeks but not much longer. Maybe a week is quite enough or people will stop checking if anything happens. Perhaps a couple of days in the beginning and then gradually stretch it to a week (but not the way things tend to go - I won't suggest we'll stretch it to a year, eventually). What do you think? -- Style Guide 05:58, 26 May 2009 (UTC)
Politics
I call the Politics Portal... and Multili where did you get the header image for the science one? - - - Silly Angel Speak Contribs 09:46, 26 May 2009 (UTC)
- I made it myself - but there's a place to request for images. Ask some admin or so - I forget where it was since I've never requested any. -- Style Guide 10:52, 26 May 2009 (UTC)
- Ok, well if you or someone else could make an image for politics that would be great. Politics Portal - - - Silly Angel Speak Contribs 11:01, 26 May 2009 (UTC)

- Nah (not nah but the other, not meh either...?) just to avoid duplicating work in the initial stage. -- Style Guide 13:44, 26 May 2009 (UTC)
- These things do take a good while to setup initially. Most of the work goes into creating the randomly-selected lists (i.e. did you knows and the like). --Mnb'z 18:23, 26 May 2009 (UTC)
- That's why. -- Style Guide 18:34, 26 May 2009 (UTC)
- All I need to do is figure out how to get a good header image... i might spork the potatos from yours Multili. And I think that it is pretty good, what else do you think I need to change on the portal? - - - Silly Angel Speak Contribs 18:45, 26 May 2009 (UTC)

What Other Portals...
...do you guys plan on doing? If I might make some suggestions:
- Music
- History
- Literature
- Cinema & Theater
- Sports
- Mathematics
- Popular Culture
etc. I wouldn't mind running something like the Literature or History portal, if you guys deem one (or both) subjects portal-worthy. —Unführer Guildy Ritter von Guildensternenstein 23:04, 26 May 2009 (UTC)
- Those both are portal-worthy of course. Wikipedia has the subcategory portals as subportals to category portals, which is a good way to have them but for one thing: it takes a lot of time to set up all worthy subcategory portals. My opinion is, it might be more practical to make the 8 (or if it gets changed by court order, more) main category portals and concentrate on producing good material for them, by selecting, proofreading, rewriting. That way we would have more traffic in them, which I suppose would at least initially look better than a large selection of half-made portals (which could but won't necessarily happen). On the other hand, if we do it the Mnbvcxz way and just include somewhere on the page a list of featured articles in the category, it won't look all bad. Depends on who does it and how, I guess - I have more than enough with Science portal only. -- Style Guide 07:51, 27 May 2009 (UTC)
- I bet Mnbvcxz is doing one about some kind of thingy related to the producing of offspring right now.
- We are covering these first:
23:06, 26 May 2009 (UTC)
Politics, Games, Computers, History, People, Quaint, Coherent,
bu go and start on another one and we will find a place for it!
- And I have semi-claimed History, but we could do a colab on it. - - - Silly Angel Speak Contribs 23:10, 26 May 2009 (UTC)
- Do we really need "Quaint" and "Coherent" portals? Seems sort of stupid. —Unführer Guildy Ritter von Guildensternenstein 23:14, 26 May 2009 (UTC)
- Haha we dont, they just were included when I copied the topics from the main page. - - - Silly Angel Speak Contribs 23:28, 26 May 2009 (UTC)
- Guildy - maybe we could ask the Cabal (if they agree to exist long enough for us to ask) if something else could be promoted instead of Quaint and Coherent. I suppose Technology could have a main category of its own, now it's under Science. Or Society like Wikipedia has. Suggestions? -- Style Guide 05:05, 27 May 2009 (UTC)
- See what I said above for suggestions as to portal topics. —Unführer Guildy Ritter von Guildensternenstein 16:06, 27 May 2009 (UTC)

I'd probably put in some work on the Music portal, if we decide to go that route. I could make some sort of image for it definitely. I guess I'll start that up in my userspace when I get home today. -RAHB 22:31, 27 May 2009 (UTC)

Completed Portals
Here is a list of portals that are currently being worked on or completed.
- Once you think you are finished with a portal, please contact either Multiliteralist or Silly Angel with a link to the portal, and we will look over it and pass it on to verification by an admin so that it can become official.
- I'll need to modify that a bit: if you make a portal and think it's OK, just spork it over to Mordillo or Spang to check out and decide. If you want me to read it before, I will of course do it, but I have no actual say to what gets linked on front page. Just to disambiguate. -- Style Guide 06:14, 27 May 2009 (UTC)

Do we really need...
...portals on things like "Sonic" and "Pregnancy"? I was under the impression that these would be for fairly major topics only--stuff like Science, Technology, Art, etc. Instead, I come home from my friend's house to see that there's portals on stuff like Sonic the Hedgehog and Pregnancy (why not just make Preg. under a much larger category, like "Medicine"? And put Sonic under "Games"? Seriously, now, c'mon. —Unführer Guildy Ritter von Guildensternenstein 07:18, 27 May 2009 (UTC)
- Alright, so I just read that those are both "sub-portals", though that very fact begs another question: do we really need portals that direct to directories full of other portals? —Unführer Guildy Ritter von Guildensternenstein 07:20, 27 May 2009 (UTC)
- I'm with you on that, let's try to keep it to major subjects - re the categories on the main page. I certainly don't think pregnancy or Sonic warrants their own portal, or even a sub portal. --~ 14:05, 27 May 2009 (UTC)
- In total agreement there. --UU - natter 14:09, May 27
- Actually, I think the narrower sub-portals are acutally more useful, because you aren't working with a data overload. Basically, the narrower portals can give a reader an idea of whats going on in a given subject, how well this wiki covers it, what articles need fixed, et cetera. Its possible for a user to know what is going on with all the Sonic articles, but its not possible for a user to know what is going on with every game related article.

- Ideally, Sonic probably should be a sub-portal of a video game portal. However, I skipped a level to see what a lower level sub-portal would look like. Also, those portals aren't hurting anything, and they do convey some useful information. --Mnb'z 16:53, 27 May 2009 (UTC)

Just My Two Cents
This is concerning aesthetics more than the actual concept (which I think is great, by the way), but am I the only person who thinks the various shades of baby blue and pastel aqua with the salmon-pink thrown in make the portal pages look ugly? You know, like...really ugly. A common rule for design is to stick with two colors, and work only with different saturation and light values of those two colors. User:KneeChee27/sig2 02:40, 27 May 2009 (UTC)
- There are too many common rules for design to really worry over - but of course the designs can be modified if they look really ugly to you. I don't even notice such a thing, it's good enough if nothing slaps me in the face when I open a page. If you refer to Science portal: I just copied Dawg's user page. I think it's OK to have different hues for different actions/pieces of content but if you disagree, it's not important to me at all - change it if you want to. -- Style Guide 05:01, 27 May 2009 (UTC)
- It could just be the fact that I'm a "design student", but it seems that it would be easier to navigate, as well as more visually pleasing, if a solid blue or green (with a darker border) were used instead of the current...um...motif? Of course, this is just a suggestion for polishing up the look of the portals. I suppose if I weren't lazy, I could always make a prettier version in my userspace and present it to the portal manager for approval. User:KneeChee27/sig2 05:14, 27 May 2009 (UTC)
- Now the Science portal and I think Politics and Art also resemble Front page, which is an important point in the choice of colours. I don't govern any aspect of the portals, I'm just a guy who came up with the idea of making them and argued it with some people until this is what we have. If you want to change the outlook of them, I suggest you ask the Cabal. Mordillo and Spang have been interested in this project from the start and have helped, RAHB as well. Main thing for me personally is that the portals don't get any harder to edit (or to read), which probably isn't your idea anyway. -- Style Guide 06:06, 27 May 2009 (UTC)
- If you think you could make the colours better, by all means go for it :) • Spang • ☃ • talk • 11:48, 27 May 2009

Portal Themes: A Proposal
As a professional web designer, I feel I may be able to be of some assistance here. I'd like to be in charge of skinning the portals for consistency. My objective is to use the existing design that was set up by wikipedia (our entire basis for mockery) and make it better. I agree with KneeChee27 about the two-tone effect, and I can make the templates/boxes/etc so they are amazingly simple to use. I propose that if it's okay with all of you, I start on one example portal and once the design is narrowed down I can propagate it through all the rest. What you tink??? – ...·º•ø®@» LEG CUN GUN DUN 16:39, 8 June 2009
- Feel free to improve them. They work well enough now and resemble front page so I wouldn't go into the trouble myself. Gotta voice my opinion the "problem" with the two tones is nitpicking but monotone isn't any worse either. -- Style Guide 17:39, 8 June 2009 (UTC)
- Why not create your own portal as an example? We could use a sports sub-portal Portal:Games/Sports, a Mario sub-portal Portal:Games/Mario, a Zelda sub-portal Portal:Games/Zelda, a Medicine portal Portal:Science/Medicine, or more or less anything. --Mnb'z 18:20, 8 June 2009 (UTC)
