WASHINGTON, D.C. -- U.S. President Donald Trump emceed an ostentatious parade on the nation's birthday, enraging members of his political opposition. They accused the President of "politicizing" the holiday. The comment generally came from Members of Congress, most of whom have never politicized anything.
Even Justin Amash, the Michigan libertarian who garnered dozens of headlines as the only Republican to call for Trump's impeachment, and none at all since he took the next step and transitioned to being just another independent calling for impeachment, said Trump's role was inappropriate. And Amash is still trailing the remaining Republican candidate.
Trump was criticized for "putting himself at the center" of the festivities, by Chuck Schumer, who is the rightful center, based on being the leader in the U.S. Senate of the party with the second largest number of members. Hillary Clinton took time off her two-year book tour for What Happened? — her retrospective on the 2016 U.S. election — to concur that it should not be "all about him."
Trump reportedly asked Vladimir Putin, Xi Jinping, Ayatollah Khamenei, and Kim Jong-Un to put on overcoats and accompany him on a reviewing stand as armaments rolled past. But all four preferred to stay home and try to kindle fire under their balky domestic economies.
The militaristic display galled Elizabeth Warren and her colleagues, who have envisioned elimination of I.C.E. as the opening move for the eventual discontinuation of the entire U.S. military. "An undefended nation is not dangerous," she said. "It's just common-sense governance" comparable to common-sense gun-law reform.
Joe Biden called Trump's speech a "stroke to his ego" even before listening to it. Biden, the leading Democrat to oppose Trump in 2020, has been beset with gaffes, such as describing how Franklin Delano Roosevelt held a fireside chat by "television" after the stock crash of 1929. However, Trump outdid Biden, gushing about how "Our Army...took over airports" during the War of 1812.
The gaffe could be excused, but Trump went into detail about how his proposed U.S. Space Force had secured Reagan National as well as LAX, though stopping short of calling it a "Mission Accomplished." Trump blamed his remarks on a balky teleprompter. In 2015, he had said that candidates "shouldn’t be allowed to use teleprompters, because you don’t even know if the guy is smart." Fortunately, there is currently no doubt at all. And he can ad-lib with the best of them.
