Forum:Uncyclopedia Events Planner
Uncyclopedia has had many different events in the past, mostly writing competitions, but not only. Some of them we still host (such as the PLS or the Happy Monkey) and some of which we have forgotten about. My idea is to create a planner of the events we would like to have every year with their exact dates, so that there is at least one every season and there is at least a month between two different ones.
- The benefits
- It will...
- ... make it more difficult to miss any specific event, even if you don't visit Uncyclopedia regularly.
- ... be possible to sign up in advance.
- ... reduce the chances of us forgetting to organize something.
- ... increase the amount of events we host annually, most of which are very important for the growth of Uncyclopedia.
And here is my list of all the events that ever took place on Uncyclopedia and some information about each - User:Anton199/Events. If you find an event I have missed, please, add it to my list!
The most interesting ones to discuss are those which we have stopped organizing, because concerning the rest, they already take place regularly... or almost regularly. So to help create this planner, could you, please, vote for or against different events (which we don't organize any longer) to see which ones we should put inside it? Anton (talk) 13:12, August 15, 2014 (UTC)
The first draft of the planner is ready. What do you think about it?
Description | Date | Judging | ||
---|---|---|---|---|
Poo Lit Surprise | Uncyclopedia's main competition, held since 2006 | September 20 - October 4, 2014 | October 4 - October 11, 2014 | |
The Article Whisperer | Requested articles competition | January 4 - January 18, 2015 | January 18 - January 25, 2015 | |
Pee Week | Reviewing competition (only in-depth reviews count) | March 15 - March 22, 2015 | March 22 - March 29, 2015 | |
Summer Extravaganza | Summer-oriented team contest (several rounds) | Round 1: August 1 - August 7, 2015/ Round 2: August 17 - August 24, 2015 | Round 1: August 7 - August 17, 2015 / Round 2: August 24 - August 31, 2015 |
Dates were not chosen at random, but they are definitely not the optimal solution, so can be changed. I explained the way I organized all the competitions at User:Anton199/Planner#Notepad. Is there anything that needs to be changed? And if yes, what? Anton (talk) 15:02, August 26, 2014 (UTC)
Uncyclopedia:Aristocrat's Turkey Day Ball
- Description: a writing contest that values tasteless articles, as far as I understand.
- Against. I see this event as fun only to those who take part in it without any benefit for the website or community. Never having taken part in it myself, my judgement might be wrong, of course. Anton (talk) 13:14, August 15, 2014 (UTC)
- Against. I would retire the competition for now. --RomArtus*Imperator ITRA (Orate) ® 07:48, August 16, 2014 (UTC)
- Against. Sorry. Sir ScottPat (converse) 18:49, August 16, 2014 (UTC)
- Against. I enjoy tasteless, done right. I am not in favor of tasteless as a primary goal. Spıke Ѧ 23:35 20-Aug-14
- Against. I don't enjoy tasteless articles, and have tended to avoid the site around the time this competition was held. -- Simsilikesims(♀GUN) Talk here. 23:51, August 20, 2014 (UTC)
- Against. Sorry, but no. I recall Shabidoo writing a fine (but not especially tasteless, I reckon; it didn't win) piece for this contest on the Site That Must Not Be Named, but outside of that I mostly find the articles written to be annoying or gross, and I agree that having tasteless as a primary goal is not something that benefits the community, however fun it may seem at the time. ❦ Llwy-ar-lawr • talk • contribs • 00:47, August 23, 2014 (UTC)
Uncyclopedia:The Article Whisperer
- Description: A writing contest, where participants choose their own topic among the list of requested articles
- For. Encourages writers to create feature-quality requested articles, that have been requested by others - which means that they are important for this site to have. Anton (talk) 13:18, August 15, 2014 (UTC)
- For. The requested list could do with an update as well. --RomArtus*Imperator ITRA (Orate) ® 07:50, August 16, 2014 (UTC)
- For. — Yes, Romartus, being on UN:REQ only means that one Uncyclopedian has stuck it on the list (so that someone else will write an article that the original guy is probably more of an expert on) (and I've seen a guy stick a subject on UN:REQ and then go on to write the article); it does not mean that they are "important for this site to have." Spıke Ѧ 23:40 20-Aug-14
Uncyclopedia Summer Extravaganza
- Description: a team summer-related writing contest
- For. Encourages team-work and writing feature-quality articles. Anton (talk) 13:21, August 15, 2014 (UTC)
- For. Collaborations are fun. We don't have enough fun. Spıke Ѧ 23:41 20-Aug-14
- Abstain. We probably don't have enough active writers to form two teams to compete against each other. If we did, it would be fun. -- Simsilikesims(♀GUN) Talk here. 23:45, August 20, 2014 (UTC)
- For. Anton needs more friends and we need more collabs. Sir ScottPat (converse) 12:20, August 22, 2014 (UTC)
- For. I think I have only really worked on one genuine collab - Hmor - the others have been one writer starts a work and another's edits are welcomed Frida Kahlo and Queen Victoria come to mind. --RomArtus*Imperator ITRA (Orate) ® 12:25, August 22, 2014 (UTC)

Pee Buddy Awards (held only once)
- Description: an UnNews article-writing contest
- For. New UnNews articles are displayed on our main page and are a criterion by which users can judge how updated we are on modern events. And my guess is that they are also the articles most of our general audience will be mostly interested in. That's why, in my opinion, we should encourage the writing of UnNews'es and the Pee Buddy Awards accomplishes it perfectly. Anton (talk) 13:27, August 15, 2014 (UTC)
- Against. Everyone is free to write UnNewses. With additional pushing, we'll get things that aren't UnNewses, forced to fit the UnNews mold, by users who are not updated on modern events. Spıke Ѧ 23:42 20-Aug-14
- Against. Right now, there is no shortage of new UnNewses. The other competitions should be higher priority. -- Simsilikesims(♀GUN) Talk here. 23:47, August 20, 2014 (UTC)
- Against. Agree with above two comments. Sir ScottPat (converse) 12:21, August 22, 2014 (UTC)
Hourly writing contest
- Description: its title basically summarizes it
- Abstain. Not sure if this competition adds to the quality of our articles, due to its short duration, but it might be an interesting event for users, who won't edit Uncyclopedia many days in a row - which our other competitions, such as PLS, require. Anton (talk) 13:31, August 15, 2014 (UTC)
- Against. Seems to me we'll just get more articles that look like they've been written in under an hour by the sleep-deprived. Captain gull (talk) 23:32, August 20, 2014 (UTC)
- Against. Of all the goals we have for articles, finishing in an hour or under is a giant non-goal. Spıke Ѧ 23:36 20-Aug-14
- Conditional For For only if the articles have to stay in userspace until cleared for mainspace. This could be good practice for new writers who are under the mistaken impression that an article takes about 15 minutes (or even only five!) to write. The end result is likely to be substandard/incomplete either way, but that's what userspace is for. -- Simsilikesims(♀GUN) Talk here. 23:39, August 20, 2014 (UTC)
- Or the articles could go through VFD just after they were all completed. That's how it or a similar contest was done in the past. ❦ Llwy-ar-lawr • talk • contribs • 22:45, August 22, 2014 (UTC)

Uncyclopedia:Conservation Week
- Description: Participants rewrite as many random articles as they can and are judged on the quantity and quality.
- For. With more than 30,000 articles and only a minority of them - featured, this two week long competition will help rise the quality of Uncyclopedia's humour. Anton (talk) 13:33, August 15, 2014 (UTC)
- For. I know there are some articles I'd like to rewrite or clean up considerably but can't find the motivation to proceed. This might help with that. Captain gull (talk) 23:25, August 20, 2014 (UTC)
- Against. I wouldn't want an article I have taken care of, which is in good shape, to be picked "at random" and rewritten solely because it's Conservation Week. Spıke Ѧ 23:55 20-Aug-14
- Comment. I took "random" in this context to mean the content of the article, not so much the means of finding an article to re-write. If that's indeed the case then I rescind my vote. Captain gull (talk) 01:04, August 21, 2014 (UTC)
- Comment. Random page has traditionally been one means of finding bad articles to fix up, but the competition usually makes it clear that it does not have to be found randomly if it is a bad article you've been meaning to fix. Also, it should be clear in the rules that you do not *have* to rewrite the first page you find at random. The only catch here I see is that someone might not do a better job of rewriting what was originally there. -- Simsilikesims(♀GUN) Talk here. 01:19, August 21, 2014 (UTC)

- Against. Find some crap and re-write by all means but don't re-write an article you found at random. Sir ScottPat (converse) 12:27, August 22, 2014 (UTC)
Pee Week
- Description: Participants review as many articles as they can and are judged on their quantity and in-depth.
- Definitely for Considering the frequency of new Pee Reviews, I think reviewing should be encouraged by all means. Anton (talk) 13:37, August 15, 2014 (UTC)
- For. This has been needed for over a year, perhaps two. -- Simsilikesims(♀GUN) Talk here. 23:35, August 20, 2014 (UTC)
- For. We tell newbies to ask for a second opinion in many places — then we leave them hanging. A competition might encourage people to "suck as well as they blow" as the directions say, or something. Spıke Ѧ 23:37 20-Aug-14
- For.. When I first arrived here, no one could nominate their own article for featuring. Having a Pee Review often meant it got nommed by the reviewer if they liked it enough. One of the best Pee Reviewers is our esteemed (if retiring) leader ChiefjusticeDS. --RomArtus*Imperator ITRA (Orate) ® 12:29, August 22, 2014 (UTC)
Uncyclopedia:Forest Fire Week
- Description: a maintenance week, when users tag as many low quality articles as they can find, and if those are not brought over to VFD, where they are voted kept, all of these articles are deleted without any votes or community discussion.
- Abstain. Humour is often subjective, as articles you don't find funny might be hilarious for someone else, and, in addition, articles that are possibly not FA-quality now may become such with some of work. The Forest Fire Week is an extremely easy mean to delete all those and is a good way to create plenty of red links, which will require a lot of efforts to be blue again. However, I am not against it as such, especially if it takes place after the Conservation Week. Anton (talk) 13:45, August 15, 2014 (UTC)
- Comment. I agree as regards the red links issue. A good article could end up with far too many red links which either involves removing, writing a replacement article or just adding a link to wikipedia. --RomArtus*Imperator ITRA (Orate) ® 07:46, August 16, 2014 (UTC)
- Against. VFD works, if everyone voting here would go over and vote there. (Heck, if so, even VFH would work!) And if everyone finding a junk article would nominate it. (There is no recent clamor for the limit on ballots to be raised above 20.) From time to time we hear that our plethora of junk articles is turning off the reader. (On off days, we hear that our plethora of guidelines to prevent junk articles is turning off the author.) VFD assures everyone that they can try to protect their work with an appeal to voters. Deletion for its own sake is like writing UnNews for its own sake. Spıke Ѧ 23:47 20-Aug-14
- Against. In theory, FFW is a way to get a large swath of bad articles deleted; in practice, it is a way to get a large swath of random articles deleted, which may or may not be bad and frequently include some rather good ones. VFD works much better because more editors are expected to express an opinion, rather than the decision being made by one editor who tags the article and one administrator who deletes it -- the latter of whom may well be the same person as the tagging editor, and both of whom are expected to be tagging and deleting as many articles in as little time as possible. ❦ Llwy-ar-lawr • talk • contribs • 22:50, August 22, 2014 (UTC)

- Unstriking. Votes are always welcome! Anton (talk) 00:21, August 23, 2014 (UTC)
- I was somehow under the impression that the score being recorded under a vote was a sign that it was closed, since I had seen a closed vote elsewhere that was like that and I notice that not all the votes here have scores, but I don't see anywhere that it means that so I'll take you at your word. ❦ Llwy-ar-lawr • talk • contribs • 00:43, August 23, 2014 (UTC)

Other comments
- It would be nice if there were always some event to look forward to. (It would also keep the UnSignpost filled up no matter what appears on Google Images and in the trade press.) It would be a chore if there were so many of these that editing here were structured. I haven't participated in competitions since the 2009 Poo Lit Surprise, as I write when the Muse hits me; being funny on command results in not-as-funny. Spıke Ѧ 23:53 20-Aug-14
- Omitted from this list is competitions where the format is the one used in our most recent competition: A committee picks articles that we don't have (or that are very bad and no one is showing any sign of doing anything about) and that we need (as opposed to someone having typed it into UN:REQ) and you get ample time (more than 1 hour) to do it up right, for formal judging and review. Result
You are welcome to add votes or comments, if you have any, but I think we can already determine the result with the existing ones. The events to be held are The Article Whisperer, Uncyclopedia Summer Extravaganza and the Pee Week. Considering that we have to keep on hosting PLS and that the Wiki World Cup may take place in 2015, the rest of the 2014 and 2015 will be very interesting for Uncyclopedia editors. I'll work on the actual planner at User:Anton199/Planner. Anton (talk) 14:29, August 25, 2014 (UTC)
