Forum:Petition: Delete BHOP
Before I went on a rant how BHOP detracts from writing, but I realize that isn't the main problem. It detracts mostly from reading, which in turn lowers vote count, which lessens article frequency, which spurs everyone to whine about everything.
Therefore, let's get rid of it.

NO! NO! NO!!! NOOOOOOO!!!! You can't delete the very thing that keeps people distracted. The whole purpose of Uncyclopedia is to distract. We're just so good at it that we distract ourselves. And we're not to a million yet. VT 01:37, 3 December 2008 (UTC)
- The purpose of Uncyclopedia is to provide laughter and distraction to others in the form of articles. No one outside of the Uncyclopedia community actually reads BHOP.
- By the way, for someone with over 40% of their edits in the forum, you're in no position to lecture me about what Uncyclopedia is about --
- I'm not going to lecture anyone about what the site is about, but I see what you mean. While a lot of my edits are in the forum, I (a long time ago, in a galaxy far, far, away...) used to actually edit articles. Then I realized a lot of the shit I wrote was sub-par and noobish. So I now attempt to help with the site, contributing in VFD, voting on decisions where voting counts, and occasionaly VFH and VFP. I can see why you think it's disrupting the site, but as long as it's people who wouldn't normally contribute much anyway, leave them be and let more experienced users visit them, like an orphanage or a zoo. Colin ALL YOUR BASEHeaney! Casa Bey Superfly Portfolio 04:15, 3 December 2008 (UTC)
- So you'd prefer to laze away instead of actually aim at improving yourself? I see. --
- Besides, anyone who actually does anything to harm the site (i.e. Blanking, Chcuk Norris jokes, BENSON!...) usually gets caught and banninated. You can't claim that everyone here is a lazy bastard just because they don't contribute directly. Colin ALL YOUR BASEHeaney! Casa Bey Superfly Portfolio 04:24, 3 December 2008 (UTC)
- If you're not part of the solution, you're part of the problem. I normally wouldn't care, but my record for lowest-favored article on VFH was recently and consistently challenged/broken recently. If we don't shape up quickly, we're going to die. --
- I personally think the site in general has been on a 6-month writers block. But like I said, not all of us can write really good material (i.e. look at my contributions and you'll find no writing for about the last 10 months, with the exception of Joe the Plumber), but you'll still find some of us contributing at VFD, reverting crap edits, and VFH/VFPing, and maybe Peeing. Pointing out of the fact that TKF's logic could be applied to any forum discussion in any section, and in fact any action that isn't reading an article, and therefore it might be easier to delete everything that isn't an article and force people to do nothing but read uncyclopedia articles all day, regardless of what they actually want to do, because people doing what they want to do is clearly not in Uncyclopedia's best interests

- Hah! Oh, Spang, even your defenses are needlessly wordy and random. And you even got your brainless cronies to defend you so quickly, too!
- No, this could not be applied to "anything that is not an article," because BHOP is one of the only things on this site that doesn't actually serve a purpose. And it does a very, very good job at doing nothing. If people want to be idiots, go do it on 4chan, or Gaia, or on some shitty forum elsewhere. If we delete BHOP, people who could actually contribute to Uncyclopedia otherwise would go do something constructive, like go to Pee Review or, God forbid, actually edit articles or vote on VFH. And if they stayed only for the BHOP, then good riddance. --
- Cronies was uncalled for. Brainless I can accept. Colin ALL YOUR BASEHeaney! Casa Bey Superfly Portfolio 18:04, 3 December 2008 (UTC)
- Dude, I was actually joking when I suggested you make this forum. As I said in IRC... BHOP stimulates a feeling of community involvement. Our strength of community spirit is very important to us. BHOP provides a place for users to mess around in when they don't fancy doing the more "serious" stuff. Having a casual laugh and joke with the other users on the site has got to be a good thing. Some users don't do much other than edit in BHOP, but if a user makes 50 BHOP posts to every 1 "useful" edit then that's more than fine with me. If they don't do anything EVER which is not in BHOP then I still probably don't care. If all they do is keep recent changes ticking over, and increasing our alexa rating, then that's fine also. I don't see the harm in it. Suggesting that people who edit BHOP would be doing something more "useful" if BHOP did not exist is simply bonkers. If people want to write articles they will, if people want to mess around in BHOP they will also. You can't force a user on a wiki to do anything. MrN Fork you! 11:08, Dec 3

The way I see it
OK, first let's establish that I've never been a "BHOP regular", or ever really posted much in it at all. But I remember when we created it, and why: to centralise all the off topic discussion in one place. Before we had BHOP, the other forums would get filled up with random meanderings and jokey posts. And I have no reason to doubt that if we deleted BHOP, that would start happening again. "So?" I hear you reply, "We can just delete them" - but for my part, I do enough deleting already, and I'd rather not have more work made for me.
The fact is that we're all here because we're aspiring comedians; or at the least, we share the attitude of not taking life too seriously. Yes, the primary goal of the site is to channel that attitude into the creation of articles, but we also need zones of what I'd call "unrestrained creativity"; that is, places where ideas can be formed through amusing conversation, and thoughts can be followed through to what Spike Milligan used to call "their illogical conclusion". One stupid post on BHOP could be responsible for the germ of a brilliant idea that develops into a featured article; and I believe that anything that furthers the cause of creativity should be utilised (with the possible exception of rape and murder).
That said, I tend to agree with the points made about certain people spending 95% of their time on the forums; it's not really what I'd call contributing to the primary objective of Uncyclopedia. I'm against sanctioning or discriminating against those people in general, but those who are just here to post in the forums shouldn't be too surprised if their opinions about the running of the site are held in less regard than those users who write regularly and/or perform the maintenance duties.
In summation: Keep BHOP. It's stupid, but it facilitates community interaction and, I believe, promulgates the cause of humour. And after all, drama and politics aside, that's what we're all about. -- Sir Codeine K·H·P·B·M·N·C·U·Bu. · (Harangue) 11:21, 3 December 2008 (UTC)
P.S.: TKF, sorry if I'm wrong, but you seem to be taking this (particularly in your interactions with Spang) a little personally. I appreciate "idiot" isn't the politest thing to be called, but let's all try and keep this discussion pragmatic and drama free, yes? I'm talking to all involved parties here, actually. It's a wonderful thing that we care so much about the aspects of the site we like, but bitching and fighting with each other is gonna degenerate the discussion and not get us anywhere. Whut?
I'm sorry, I thought the reason BHOP was created was to keep (forgive me) ridiculous posts like this off of the serious area. The way I see it, BHOP keeps the idiots in line, while worthwhile contributors could actually, you know, write 'n' stuff. Like Cainad says, you can't force someone to leave this site unless they do something ban-worthy. BHOP is for users and sometimes IPs to write their trite nonsense in their own industrial-grade steel-barred nonsense playpen without it being deleted and/or them getting banned. Deleting BHOP, I feel, would backfire. Instead of localizing and trivializing the usually harmless nonsense, the BHOP contributors would move back to the Village Dump, and no one wants that. Unless, of course, you're <insert name here>. Also, stop using the {{username}} template, please. That belongs in BHOP. • • • Necropaxx (T) {~} 17:10, Dec 3

Because we need the cabbage to keep us regular. VT 23:37, 4 December 2008 (UTC)
- To add my two cents, BHOP certainly is not necessary, nor is it productive time. People should write more. The site is dying, and that is why: people don't write as much as they sit around and bs their time away. However, this is a community of writers, not a writing machine. People can chat with their buddies if they want. Personally, I do a lot of my bs-ing on Skype and not BHOP. I love my friends here and I love talking to them both about writing, ideas, Uncyc drama, and random bs that makes me laugh. But I don't think deleting BHOP will do shit. People will waste time if they want to. I personally feel that people who don't write or perform site maintenance have no business here and therefore should leave. But I can't make them. Who knows, they may end up discovering some hidden writing talent. But I think the biggest threat to this site is the user that does not write or contribute, and only serves to stir up drama and distract the real writers from doing real work. That is why this site is dying. sirsysrq @ 23:59 Dec 4

- Writing is not a gift. It is a talent that is developed with certain proven strategies. sirsysrq @ 00:37 Dec 5
- Lies! It is a gift! From Sophia! Your link is merely one of the spells that can summon her! Sir Modusoperandi Boinc!! 03:36, 5 December 2008 (UTC)!

- I think the problem is (along with BHOP) is that many of us are suffering from writer's block. I've got about 4 dead/abandoned articles lying around, just because I ran out of ideas. I could probably do something about it, but I waste all my time on forum topics. Therefore, Delete Village Dump. • • • Necropaxx (T) {~} 16:11, Dec 5
- I have a total block. I can't come up with ANYTHING. I would be able to put out 2 great articles in a matter of days if I was able to think of things to put in an article about harpoons or Generic kung-fu noises. Suggestions? Anyone? VT 21:56, 5 December 2008 (UTC)
- 1) Watch some TV
- 2) Go see a movie
- 3) Read a book/magazine/newspaper
- 4) Go meet some people don't know. Failing that...
- 5) Go outside. Get some air.
- You can't force inspiration, but you can give it a little push. Sophia's ways are not a complete mystery. Except for the mysterious parts. Those are mysterious. Sir Modusoperandi Boinc! 23:08, 5 December 2008 (UTC)
- Thanks, MO, I needed that boost. VT 01:32, 6 December 2008 (UTC)
- You can try "in character", too. In my own humble experience, when it works it works really well. Sir Modusoperandi Boinc! 12:13, 6 December 2008 (UTC)
- Also, misdirection is always good. Iron Maiden is a good example of saying what your brain know, it not really that way real! If only I could remember what that was called. sirsysrq @ 17:32 Dec 6
- Sometimes, repetition is good. On other occasions, repetition is good. Sadly, it can get awfully repetitive. Sir Modusoperandi Boinc! 22:16, 6 December 2008 (UTC) Sir Modusoperandi Boinc! 22:16, 6 December 2008 (UTC)
