Update: Dr. Laura quits radio |
18 August 2010
LOS ANGELES, California -- Talk host Dr. Laura Schlesinger said she will give up her radio show when her contract ends at the end of the year--in order to "reclaim my First Amendment rights."
She told Larry King on Tuesday she feels freer to say what she believes needs to be said. However, the only recent utterance that was problematic was when she used the N-word repeatedly to a caller whom it offended.
She mentioned to Mr. King "some special interest group deciding...to silence a voice of dissent," a campaign that UnNews predicted on 14 August. Indeed, her producer said General Motors has pulled its advertising from the show. GM is currently owned by President Obama, who might not have understood Dr. Laura's nuanced purpose in using the N-word.
She had a similar problem in 2000, balancing the economic needs of her sponsors with an on-air campaign against homosexuality.
The talk host said she is "not quitting" but will move to the Internet, presumably starting a website that will be lucrative despite having no sponsors.
