Jeopardy producers sue Sodomy! creator |
3 August 2008
SOUTH YARRA, Australia, GNN (Goanna News Network). The producers of the long-running American quiz show Jeopardy have sued the creator of the hit Australian quiz show Sodomy!, describing it as "an offensive rip-off" of their much-loved format.
However, Sodomy! creator Brent "Potato" Couchman yesterday denied that that his show was in any way influenced by the ancient American quiz.
"For one thing, all the questions on Jeopardy are about Grover Cleveland, and the correct way to answer them is 'Who is Grover Cleveland?' In the unlikely event that we were to have a question about Grover Cleveland, the correct answer would be 'Grover Cleveland ... up the arse!' "
"Similarly, if we had a question about southern hairy-nosed wombats, the correct answer wouldn't be 'What are southern hairy-nosed wombats?', it would be 'Southern hairy-nosed wombats ... up the arse!' "
"To draw any connection between two such obviously unrelated shows is preposterous in the extreme and, frankly, bullshit. It smacks of a desperate attempt by the producers of some tired old garbage to gain publicity off the back of a new and exciting format. They can go and get fucked."
Sodomy!, which is hosted by Eddie McGuire, Ray Martin, George Negus, Jana Wendt and Brian McFadden, has attracted up to 4 million viewers per episode, as well as advertising dollars from Harvey Norman, National Tiles, Wormwood Downs Pre-Paid Funerals and several premium-rate phone sex lines.
TV enfant terrible Couchman, 36, was last in the news when he was sued by the producers of So You Think You Can Dance? over his late-night cult favourite reality show So You Think You Can Shag? The case was settled out of court.
