Private First Class Manning who, according to the Pentagon, is "at a crossroads in his life right now and needs to be on his own for a while to do some serious thinking."

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The Department of Defense today denied accusations of cruel and inhumane treatment of whistleblower Bradley Manning, who has being held in solitary confinement at a military jail in Quantico, Virginia since July, claiming Manning "just wants some time alone to think things through."

Private Manning is widely believed to be the source of thousands of secret diplomatic cables and a video of a US airstrike in Iraq that were leaked to the whistleblowing website Wikileaks last year. Friends of Manning and supporters of Wikileaks claim that the conditions of Manning's detention are inhumane and amount to "psychological torture."

However, a Department of Defense spokesperson, speaking at the Pentagon robustly denied these claims, stating that:

"There comes a time in every man's life where he needs to take a step back and ask himself some pretty serious questions. Bradley's been through a pretty stressful time recently. After the whole Wikileaks thing, he's feeling pretty burned out, and just wants to take some time out to gather his thoughts and think about where he's going with his life, his options for the future, stuff like that."

Manning is currently awaiting a pretrial hearing for disclosing classified information concerning national defense and is expected to appear before a military court in the Spring, where he is guaranteed a fair trial.
