Weird Al Yankovic was a questionable choice

ARLINGTON, Texas -- Weird Al Yankovic says he flubbed lines as he sang the national anthem at the start of the Super Bowl on Sunday night after getting high on magic mushrooms and ‘losing his grip’.

Yankovic said, “What a trip! I can’t believe it! I blew the anthem is front of the whole world! Ha! But somehow I feel vindicated!” He went on to explain what happened, “When I went to sing the line, suddenly the whole song turned into a sexual perversion, one country was reaming another country and I had no words to describe its weirdness. I don’t remember what I said.”

According to CNN, when he was supposed to sing the line “O'er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming,” Yankovic instead repeated an earlier line, with a slight variation. He sang, “What so proudly we watched at the twilight's last reaming,” repeating and mangling an earlier lyric, with the word ‘watched’ instead of ‘hailed’ and ‘reaming’ instead of ‘gleaming.’

The mistake immediately set social networks abuzz with people commenting about the effects of mushrooms on the National Anthem, as well as the suitability of Weird Al Yankovic to lead the anthem. Many people speculated that it was not a mistake, but was done on purpose simply because he’s Weird Al.

But Yankovic tried to clear the air by saying, “I only hope that everyone could feel my love for parody and that the true spirit of peaceful America still came through,” he said in a statement after the performance.

“Basically the National Anthem is a war song, and that sucks. It should be about peace and love.” Yankovic told the media. “I don’t want to sing about fighting and bombs bursting in air. That’s a bummer, man! Just ask Barak.”
