Mr. Buckley may also enjoy having sex while wearing odd costumes, such as this one.

BOSTON, Massachusetts -- Distinguished sports commentator Steve Buckley has come out of the closet.

The dramatic official revelation of his widely known homosexuality was the talk of the town. Vinny DiSalvo, a numbers runner in Eastie, said, "I had money on the Pats to win the Super Bowl, based on Steve's columns. Now I think they'll lose next week--whoever they play."

The Boston Herald ran a column with the confession, which got a graphic above the banner on the Front Page. The column itself was all about talking with his dear mother about announcing something. It never got around to saying what he was announcing. But everyone knew.

Mr. Buckley co-hosted his usual afternoon show on WEEI radio, where dozens of voice-mail callers provided the obligatory, anonymous barbs, but gently enough not to be accused of hatespeech. He was greeted normally by his co-hosts, after some subtle but frantic rearrangement of chairs.

At a coffee shop in suburban Dracut, however, one sports fan was concerned. "Are they going to let him in the locker room?" asked a man who gave his name as Smoky. The wise 95-year-old remembers the controversy surrounding Lisa Olson in 1990, although she was heterosexual. Other diners agreed that it could be problematic--unless Mr. Buckley, unlike Ms. Olson, doesn't gawk at the big black dongs, and doesn't sue the team after the players talk back.
