It's been almost a month since spring officially started on March 20th and there's nothing surprising about that. However, spring is the time of surprises by definition, especially if it's an Arab Spring, and it would be contrary to the Uncyclopedia spirit to simply let it pass. Spike proposed that we do another competition after the success or relative success of the few last ones, and I think that it's a good idea. After all, what will keep Uncyclopedians occuppied if not Uncyclopedia itself?

What I am thinking if is Surprise Me! Spring Festival, something that does not yet exist, but with your help soon will. It'd be interesting to have a more or less friendly contest, where each would be assigned a topic or several possible topics to pick up from and his goal would be to look at something ordinary from the most surprising angle he can think of. Now, this is just my idea. I'd love to hear yours.

Also, if you have nothing against it, I propose the competition to be a week long and start this week-end. Please, tell me what you think and whether you wish participate! Anton (talk) 10:28, April 19, 2015 (UTC)

Site notice is up; tell me what else I can do (such as (1) Jump in; or (2) Stay out). As it is already the weekend here, I presume you mean starting 0:00 25-Apr UTC or so.
The essence of this competition would be to develop/show your skill at writing funny stuff on a topic you had not planned to write about. So assignments would be at random by the organizers. Shall we disclose in advance the complete set of articles, so that people can start thinking about them? Shall we ask for nominees from the contestants — provided that no one gets assigned the page he nominated? Spıke Ѧ 12:48 19-Apr-15
Sorry, I indeed meant April 25th. Thanks for the site notice! Your idea is the best option, as for me: it would be great if everyone could participate at all levels: each person can suggest one or several topics, in advance, and then others choose what they'd like to write about (from the list of other people's suggestions) and research it, as you said. We could even judge all together: each candidate could score the entries that are not his own.
And jump in, of course! Anton (talk) 14:59, April 19, 2015 (UTC)

So, who's interested?

And what do people want to see written?

  • I hear a lot about the candidates here in this Cheap Liquor First-Vote-in-the-Nation state, and did articles on the two silliest ones (Jeb Bush and Elizabeth Warren), but we are still lacking articles on Ted Cruz, Marco Rubio, and His Royal Hugeness Chris Christie. Spıke Ѧ 15:09 20-Apr-15
  • Qaz123 had a promising concept (and not much more) in Noble gases, whose {{ICU}} just expired. Spıke Ѧ 10:09 21-Apr-15
  • Well it's about surprises isn't it? So it should be a) articles on absolutely anything, b) articles all detailing aspects of a very particular subject (for instance election systems, airlines, manufacturers of tractor engines (okay that one may be a little too far)), in which the winner is the article that takes the limited material in its subject and stretches it to its most imaginative reaches or c) non-encyclopedic articles. I think formats like UnBooks or UnScripts often hold more potential for surprising humour. Sigphoto.jpg|(get dtf) 17:32, April 22, 2015 (UTC)
Sorry just read the introduction properly. I should probably get checked out for ADD or something. Anyway, my suggestions stand as articles on election systems, airlines and engine manufacturers. ~EveryOtherUsernameWasTaken(dtf?) 18:24, April 22, 2015 (UTC)
Yeah it's about surprises, but my concept is that the contestants don't surprise us, the organizers surprise you. Details just below. Please get specific, as in: Code red-links. Spıke Ѧ 01:02 23-Apr-15
  • I wonder whether an article on chamber pots could go places. I've thought about how to write this several times, but so far nothing has come out right. Jonny appleseed (talk) 20:36, April 22, 2015 (UTC)
Pun? I did not start this section to get opinions but to get nominations, which the contest organizers might assign to writers other than those nominating them. And, as Anton199 and I still seem to be the closest things to organizers, and since there are two days left before the start of the competition, we ought to get together (perhaps here) to decide how this is going to work. My concept is that someone will collect such red-links as are offered in this section and assign one to each volunteer at the start time of the competition. Spıke Ѧ 01:02 23-Apr-15
  • Anon, by swinging and missing, has just informed us we lack an article on Hurricane. Spıke Ѧ 13:55 23-Apr-15 PS--Chocochew jumped the gun and jumped on it. However, based on his work, it can now be returned to the pool. Spıke Ѧ 11:14 24-Apr-15
  • Another Anon has made the latest try (not good enough) at creating Junk food. Spıke Ѧ 18:35 24-Apr-15
  • Halfeatenpoptart likewise disclosed that we have a gaping hole at Meme, which he temporarily plugged and I re-opened with the huff-stick. Spıke Ѧ 11:14 24-Apr-15
  • Anton199's suggestions:
  1. Films: Birdman (film), American Sniper (film), The Imitation Game (film)
  2. People: Patrick Modiano (2014 Nobel Literature Prize laureate), Jafar Panahi (famous Iranian filmmaker), Robert Wilson (American playwright and theatre stage director), Benedict Cumberbatch. Anton (talk) 13:46, April 24, 2015 (UTC)
  1. The "bird"
  2. Corn eating
  3. Eating contests
  4. Tentacle monsters
  5. In theatres soon or just Coming soon

Anton (talk) 13:55, April 24, 2015 (UTC)

  • Every's suggestions:
  1. First-past-the-post voting
  2. Additional Member System
  3. Dunlop Tyres or just Dunlop
  4. Michelin
  5. Tyres

Official writing assignments

Entrants have been creating entries in userspace (such as at User:<insert name here>/article-name). However, as there is no such article in mainspace, userspacing is not a requirement.

Sorry, it should be, as your userspace is immune from kibitzing and your contest entry will be protected, whereas you ought not create a mainspace article and warn other Uncyclopedians they can't edit it. So please create your entries in userspace. Spıke Ѧ 22:51 30-Apr-15

Late entrants are welcome (Sign in up in Section 1, and we will add your name to this table), but they won't get additional time to write!

In view of the hectic level of activity on the site, the contest should include this and next weekend, so it will end 3-May-15 at 23:59 UTC. (Anton199 has thoughts about this on my talk page.) Don't be like a grade-schooler (even if you are, like, a grade-schooler) and put this term paper off until the second weekend. That can be pure Hell. Spıke Ѧ 18:38 24-Apr-15 ff.

Judging

I have completed my judging. Here it is. I trust somebody with responsibility will now use it to work out who won (probably that bastard Romartus I always hated them).

Now I must go, my planet needs me. --ChiefjusticeWii 10:11, May 9, 2015 (UTC)

Romartus created a page with his opinions. Though I fired the starting gun during an unexplained absence of Anton199, he is the official organizer and should compile and publish the results, once there are results. Other users: Please hold off improving your articles to reflect the feedback until the results are final; I have already had to lock down two of the entries. Spıke Ѧ 11:03 9-May-15
Results

The winner, by unanimous opinion of the judges, is Jonny appleseed with Ted Cruz. Lower numbers are better, if other writers want to discover where they are in the pecking order. I'll mainspace and unlock all the entries, and list on the main page all except the two that seem incomplete. There is a redirect at their former name in your userspace; if you don't need it, please list it on QVFD Spıke Ѧ 14:37,14:48 13-May-15

Articles in the Surprise Me! Spring Festival

For all writers who contributed articles to the festival, a big thanks for your all your work. If they don't need anymore work, they can be nominated as features now (Ted Cruz is already on the 'block'). --Laurels.gifRomArtus*Imperator ITRA (Orate) ® 09:31, May 15, 2015 (UTC)
