I have an interesting proposal which I think you all might enjoy. I recently watched the show with ze frank for the first time and have been hooked ever since. What's great is that below every episode are hoverable images which display messages. They range from just observations to ads, and they are all purchased by fans.

I think it would be a good idea for us to advertise at this site for a few reasons. One, Ze Frank and his followers seem to have a very similar sense of humor to Uncyclopedia: random, topical, and intelligent all at the same time. Plus, Ze Frank's mantra is essentially the same as ours. He, too, hates people who are dicks. Two, his fan base has proven with past contests and submissions that they are more than willing to do creative stuff with little to no payoff.

I say we aim to purchase a $50 duck by teaming up and getting, say, 5 dollars from 10 people. Then we could use the alloted 50 characters to advertise our site. We could hold a contest to see which slogan gets chosen. For example, "Uncyclopedia.org: A wiki. Come, laugh, contribute!"

The show gets about a billion viewers a minute, and I think we could get a good boost in readers and positive contributors if we go through with this what say you all? -- Tinymooose.gif » Sir Savethemooses Grand Commanding Officer ... holla atcha boy» 01:31, 21 January 2007 (UTC)

  • The problem with advertising is that maybe it would boost the people who come to our site. Yah that's right. Because I estimate that 80% of edits are vandalisim/not really all that funny, but not vandalisim, and so if we got 1,000,000,000,000 more people a minute, we would soon have whatever 80% of a billion is more vandals.
While I am not against us advertising Uncyclopedia, I think that once we reach a pinicle of humor, we will have an overflow of people just begging to join. Instead of focusing our efforts on bringing people to us, we should spend more time making sure our greatest users don't leave. We should tell our friends and those we respect about Uncyclopedia, and that should be enough to bring them to us, and then to tell their friends. --Brigadier General Sir Zombiebaron 02:01, 21 January 2007 (UTC)
    • ...did you even read why I think it would be a good idea? I don't think we'd get a lot of vandals or crapbutts because Ze's humor is very intelligent and anti-being-a-jerk. He has the same demo that I think we shoot for, and that's smart/funny people. This is the opposite of advertising at, say, ED because ED is conducive to vandalism and gets 1/9,000,000 of the readers that we do. -- Tinymooose.gif » Sir Savethemooses Grand Commanding Officer ... holla atcha boy» 02:27, 21 January 2007 (UTC)
Yes STM, I read your entire note. I honestly don't know who Ze Frank is or what his show is. However, just because you watch a show, doesn't mean that the show is aimed at you. I sometimes watch BET (Black Entertainment Network), and I'm not black. We can't determe who will see the ad, and of those who see it who will come to Uncyclopedia. However, by all means go ahead. Just go ahead with the knowlage that when the Ze Frank page becomes a hot-bed of vandals, we will have someone to point the finger at ;) --Brigadier General Sir Zombiebaron 02:32, 21 January 2007 (UTC)
Are you saying a bunch of black people are going to vandalize our site? Racist. -- Tinymooose.gif » Sir Savethemooses Grand Commanding Officer ... holla atcha boy» 02:36, 21 January 2007 (UTC)
No...I said that I'm not black. The link is that not all people who watch a show are the way that the show is (ie. black, funny, old, &c), or are how the show sees its viewers being. --Brigadier General Sir Zombiebaron 02:57, 21 January 2007 (UTC)
I acctaully just watched todays zefrank show thing. It was pretty funny. Not laugh out loud funny, but funny. Although after only seeing that one, I'll have to take your word about him being "anti-vandal" STM. --Brigadier General Sir Zombiebaron 03:05, 21 January 2007 (UTC)
I remember visiting zefrank aaaages ago. The "how to dance" and the Nigerian letter one are quite brilliant, if I remember correctly. Spang talk 08:27, 21 Jan 2007

We need a Targeted Campaign Response Feedback System

I'd say STM is spot-on - zefrank does have the right demographic. But before Uncyclopedia starts spending actual money on promoting itself, we should at the very least change Template:Welcome to direct new users to a page where they can introduce themselves and let us all know how they heard of us. We should have been doing this all along, but it becomes especially crucial when you're trying to figure out which of your marketing efforts are working and which aren't.  c • > • cunwapquc? 02:54, 21 January 2007 (UTC)

Great idea. Let's get on this. Quick, though, because the show ends March 17th.-- Tinymooose.gif » Sir Savethemooses Grand Commanding Officer ... holla atcha boy» 06:44, 21 January 2007 (UTC)
How about a new members' forum, specifically for new users to introduce themselves? There's currently no place for that really. Also, we don't have nearly enough forums yet. Perhaps it would also hook them in quicker, making more people stick around longer. And if the show ends then, surely the highest viewing figures will be for then, and so would be the perfect time to advertise. Spang talk 08:25, 21 Jan 2007
I seem to recall making an entry to a "How did you get to Uncyclopedia" topic, which is now in the bowels of the forum somewhere. Most new users wouldn't find it, and a similar new one will get buried again in no time. Why not dig it up and c/p it to it's own page(s) in the Uncyclopedia: namespace, as a more permanent record of arrivals? Uncyclopedia:Customs Station, perhaps? Then we get to confiscate any goodies they try to smuggle in!

Ok, I c/p'd it like I suggested. Gotta go to work now, but I thought I'd pretty it up later, maybe split it into a-n/m-z or suchlike. . .

We do know where we get the users from, internet forums, wikipedia, humor sites, etc. That's what we can learn from a quick look at Forum:How_Did_You_Get_to_Uncyclopedia?. The question would be what other potential places to get users from. What do uncyclopedians watch, read, listen to, etc. Also age, general interests, hobbys and the like. We could make a survey, the wikia marketing guys could help us on this.---Asteroid B612B612.jpg (aka Rataube) - Ñ 16:55, 21 January 2007 (UTC)
I suggested a while back that we use our own google analytics account to track where people come from to find us, and even where they live mainly, which would help in any future targetted advertising effort. I have an account on it already which means we wouldnt need have the usual wait time that people have when applying for an account there. ~Sir Rangeley Icons-flag-us.png GUN WotM UotM EGA +S (talk) 17:03, 21 January 2007 (UTC)
I remember you suggesting that, Rang. Didn't someone say that Wikia already had that for us? Or am I remembering wrong?--<<Bradmonogram.png>> 13:31, 22 January 2007 (UTC)
Wikia do have that, but I doubt very much that they'd make the data available. I'm sure it would be possible to add a second counter in via javascript, which wikipedia does, and as far as I can see is not disallowed by Wikia's terms of service, assuming the community wants it. I'm all for adding this in - perhaps a topic specifically about this would be better? Spang talk 13:51, 22 Jan 2007
We should be able to make it available. We just need to set up an account for someone from here to access the Uncyclopedia data. Michael has added it to his to-do list, and thinks he should be able to do this quickly. So who would have the password? An admin I guess, or a couple of admins... who can then pass on the data to whoever needs it. (of course, this is subject to Michael getting it set up as easily as we anticipate). It's not possible for you to add your own analytics code, as I understand it, you don't have access to the place it has to go. We can add it for you, but at the moment we are having problems with getting two codes to work at the same time (it's supposed to be possible, but just won't work). So giving access to our copy seems the best way for now -- sannse<staff/> (talk) 20:46, 22 January 2007 (UTC)
I've got the password... who am I giving it to? -- sannse<staff/> (talk) 21:07, 23 January 2007 (UTC)
You could always give it to Range since he's the one who keeps suggesting we get it, but that's just the random ramblings of an old man. Pay me no mind.--<<Bradmonogram.png>> 02:06, 24 January 2007 (UTC)
Hmmm, my bad, I assumed that would be top-secret wikia data. Indeed, Rangely would probably be a good choice, seeing as he already has an account with google analytics, I assume he knows how to use it. Spang talk 05:43, 24 Jan 2007
Typical... I set this up, and the devs find the bug that was preventing two analytics codes being run on the same wiki. So we could set up a separate account now. But it's all the same data, so might as well just give Rangely the password. Range, I need an email address... ta -- sannse<staff/> (talk) 08:25, 24 January 2007 (UTC)

In case you're still not sure about Zefrank

Today has proof that he is very much in tune with Uncyclopedia's sensibilities. Watch today's show and look really hard starting when he first says "beans." -- Tinymooose.gif » Sir Savethemooses Grand Commanding Officer ... holla atcha boy» 00:25, 23 January 2007 (UTC)
