MALAWI, South Africa -- A gay couple in Malawi, who were found guilty of being a gay couple in Malawi, were sentenced to 51 years in prison.
Bitch Steven Mojenza, 26, and stud Tiwonge Chimbalanga, 20, were convicted in a rural kangaroo court Tuesday.
The pair were arrested in December at their home in Blantyre, Malawi, for professing their love by holding hands. They were rounded up after prudish witness reports surfaced, charged under stone-age-era sodomy laws and detained at Chichiru Prison without bail.
The arrests received some popular support in the conservative southern African nation, but sparked condemnation by gay rights activists. Human rights groups including Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch have called for release of the poofters.
Critics on the scene condemned the sentence. "There was no victim in this case, yet they were given a very harsh sentence by the judge," said Gift Trapence, executive director of the "Malawi Fudge Packers Association."
"Most people are repugnant towards homosexuality," said Canaan Phiri, secretary general of the Malawi Council of Churches. "People dare not declare their homosexuality because it's highly illegal."
Ahead of the verdict, the two poofs thanked their supporters, remaining defiant in a statement released through Trapence. In it, Chimbalanga said: "I love Steven so much. If people or the world cannot give me the chance and freedom to continue living with him as my sex slave, then I'm better off to frolic here in prison, where there are lots of horny stallions."
