Forum:Vector skin
So as some of you may or may not be aware, I've been working on a mock-up of the vector skin for the past little while, and now it's kind of functional (relatively speaking), so I suppose I should show you all and then get lynched or something. But seriously, it's still not very good; things are backwards, it doesn't entirely work on Windows, and works even less on IE (well, I mean, it works from a functional standpoint, but it comes out looking a little funny (though not as funny as it probably could))...
But this is where you all come in. Even if you can't fix things or give ideas as to how to fix them, even finding issues would be a huge help. Please, test it out, if you're willing. Use the skin, go about your usual whatnots, and if anything looks wrong - pages, pieces of the software, etc, let me know. Like how the fake logos and featured stamps are too low with this because the page content is lower, stuff like that, or things missing that should be in the skin, or things that don't work...
Also, if anyone knows javascript and could make/steal some collapsible menus and whatnot, that'd be wonderful. And the tabs... the right menu is all backwards, I know, since I couldn't figure out how to do it properly because in monobook the cactions are all one list (Vector has two. I think they're in separate divs, even). Only thing I can think of to fix that would be js; if anyone could write a thing to make the stuff on the right a separate list from the stuff on the left or has a better idea, it'd be much appreciated.
Anyway, I dumped the thing in a gadget, so testing it should be pretty simple. To enable it, just go into your preferences, go to gadgets, and check the bottom one under 'Interface gadgets'.
How does it look? ~ 07:58, 30 May 2011
- Sidebar could look better. Otherwise, everything else looks fine and dandy to me, though the edit positioning will take some getting used to. --
- What's wrong or off or whatnot about it, and what browser and OS do you use?

- Other than the whole "backwards menu" thing, which is my biggest issue with this, the featured logo in featured articles seems to get eclipsed by the hollow potato logo. It should be clearly visible across the hollow potato logo. Otherwise, it's actually quite nicely done. --Scofield & The Machine 08:31, May 30, 2011 (UTC)
- Er, the featured thing goes behind the logo; always has, far as I know. But aye, I'm working on making it go in the right spot regardless of content position... Stupid absolute positioning

- Nice job, well done!
- Just give the links in the sidebar a little indent to the right. Tabs look perfect in Opera and IE 8. Completly broken in IE7, but let's ignore that crappy browser. In IE9 and Firefox 4 the blue line under selected tabs is visible, so give
li#ca-nstab-mediawiki.selected a
one more pixel forpadding-bottom
--Nachteule 10:30, May 30, 2011 (UTC)- Do that and it doesn't work in any of the other ones, and I'd rather make the browsers that aren't giant piles of crap a higher priority, and yes, FF4 is a giant pile of crap. If you could tell me why I can't make the li items display: blocks with set heights, though, that'd be a lot more useful, seeing as it's apparently how they treat padding that's apparently causing it.
~ 17:07, 30 May 2011 Absolutely beautiful. Other than the search bar looking a little strange in Chrome, the vector skin looks simply wonderful.-- 12:01, May 30, 2011 (UTC)
- I looks fine, but it feels a bit "clunky" for some reason, like the pages are now unnecessarily large. --Mn-z 12:42, May 30, 2011 (UTC)
- Welcome to vector. Or is it worse than it ought to be?

The huge tabs (don't like) overlap the message about the pic contest and they point downwards instead of upwards. And there is no rating box on the left, if this is to be used (I hope not) please replace the rating box. And mark the "Search" as "Search". Can you put "Search" in two places? If so please leave one on the left too. That's enough for one post. This all happened because one guy, Nachteule, made a comment and now he's pushing for the change. Oh, and if this does change, or even if it doesn't, please get rid of those useless links to Chronarion and Stillwaters old blogs, that just adds clutter for nothing. Aleister 12:56 30-5-'11
- Are you using IE7. If so: Do an upgrade to IE8. If your are using IE8, you are viewing this site in fucking compatibility mode (IE8 renders it like IE7 does) -> disable compatibility mode. --Nachteule 13:20, May 30, 2011 (UTC)
- WHY YOU TROLL!!! (good point about marking the "Search" box, though.) --Scofield & The Machine 13:03, May 30, 2011 (UTC)
- I have no idea what I'm using. Some of us are computer illlitarite. How do I disable compatibility mode, and what will it do to me? I'm scared now. Will it turn into gum? And the rating box too, is it gone on purpose or was it just forgotten? Then has everyone really taken a good look at the "new" logo and realized how much less colour our pages are going to have and how much more blaher the washed out logo will make it? Aleister 13:27 30-5-'11
- p.s. I also just remembered. Somebody said when this discussion first started that there will be an option to use the skin we are using now too. Please make sure this option is there, so people like me who like the search box on the side can take it. Thanks. Aleister
- If you don't have menus, just hit "Alt"-Key. If your browser version is 8, click on "Tools" in menu and uncheck "compytibility mode". If that option is not available (grey text)), select "Compatibility mode Settings" an uncheck this and remove uncyclopedia from the list if it's there ... --Nachteule 13:48, May 30, 2011 (UTC)
- Aleister, what you're looking at isn't a skin, it's custom CSS. Also, find out which version of Internet Explorer you're using. Error reports don't mean squat unless we can get all the details. – Sir Skullthumper, MD (criticize • writings • SU&W) 13:45 May 30, 2011
- He brings up a good point about the search box; anyone know how to set the default text for those things? Stuff that goes away when you actually click on them...

- Naah, it's all Wikias fault, because they want to be like facebook and raped MediaWiki beyond recognition and hate Uncyclopedia because we don't want to look like Wikias default mess of a skin and so they punish us by not just simply installing that real vector skin for us. ;) --Nachteule 18:45, May 30, 2011 (UTC)
- Thanks, maybe I'll try that later. Much later. What about the ratings box? If this change is made please put back the ratings box, with all the current ratings which are years in the making. And the logo, Lyrtheariaya and I have had a talk, and I've finally suggested with just call our logo a pumpkin and leave it alone. That way we get all the halloween people (and most writers are Halloween people anyway) without changing a thing, and save ourselves from the blah of that bleached out logo thing. 'Aleister 18:52 30-5-'111
- p.s. I just clicked on the vanity boxes for Stillwaters and his sock, Chronaian on the side there. Stillwaters goes nowhere, it's a dead link. And Chronarian's is a link to his com. or blog or something, and if he gets one, hey, can we all get a link there too?
- Yeah, those should go, unless anyone has some serious objections, but I dunno why we kept them this long.

- Er, what's the url on that jquery? One you used doesn't work. And yes, that's rather irritating of them, especially considering just how many Uncyclopedias they do host.

Wikia
They won't install Vector for some inane reason, but perhaps they could at very least add some stuff to monobook or to a monobook (is the uncyclopedia skin really a separate skin? Because that'd do it) to make it more modifiable into a cross-compatible vector mock-up... put the links in the default cactions tabs in spans (the ones we add with scripts already do this; it's just the ones already there that don't have it) so we can style them properly (ie, <li><span><a></a></span></li> instead of just <li><a></a></li>), divide the p-cactions into two sections with separate lists, in their own divs, perhaps. Break the footer into separate lists... something for the dropdowns on the top menu (although I'm pretty sure some of our admins would never go for that, seeing as it totally messes up the delete dropdown script, at least on real vector)... things... like that. I dunno what all else, but it'd be a potential compromise that could work. ~ 19:02, 30 May 2011
Issues
Feature stamp, fake logos, etc too low- Sort of resolved; code's in place. People need to start using {{logo}}, though.- Sidebar messed up (kde, webkit)
- tabs too low/padded wrong/something (IE 7?)
- tabs too high (IE 8+, FF4)
- searchbar with box inside of box (webkit)
- searchbar defaults to 'search' (webkit)
- mouseover hides tab bottom border (windows)
- 'Search' text interferes with middle-click pasting (X)
- backwards tabs in right top menu
- Missing 'search' button (kde)
- logo too far to the right (kde)
- No stars on interwiki features (are there on monobook?)
search suggest too small (monobook and vector)
- I have an issue with the search bar on Chrome. I kinda looks like a box within a box, and when I search for something, it always takes me to the search results page instead of directly to the page whose name I was typing. --Scofield & The Machine 12:04, May 31, 2011 (UTC)
- bloody webkit... right, thanks. >.<
~ 00:11, 1 June 2011
- you styled "#mw-searchButton" and disabled "#searchGoButton" in MediaWiki:Gadget-Vector.css, maybe doing it the opposite way would fix the webkit-default-to-search-bug. I dunno.
- the inner box in search-box is the actual input field, the outer one is the fake one you styled with CSS (#p-search .pBody). Maybe it is enough to just position the normal searchbar to the top-right (without drawing border around the form) an then restyle the "Go"-button to become that nice magnifier icon. Gnaaa, my english sucks. I will test it in de.uncyclopedia, and shut my mouth until I have a solution ;) --Nachteule 02:06, June 1, 2011 (UTC)
Okay,
So I'm using the Vector skin right now, but I can't decide if I like it or not. It makes the logo white and the links purple... 0_____0 -- 19:54, June 2, 2011 (UTC)
- Oh gods, it also messes up the feature template and the image previews. Not so sure I like it... -- 19:58, June 2, 2011 (UTC)
- Visited links are less purple with that than with the monobook, and they're not purple with that, either, so... eh? Anyhow, what do you mean about the image previews?
~ 20:01, 2 June 2011
- I don't use Monobook, I use the Uncyclopedia default (although, come to think of it, that might just be Monobook). Anyway, all the image pages I went to for a while had a little thing where the image should be saying "No image preview available", but it's better now. One more thing: It also messes up the positioning of my hat logo on my userpage. *Pouts* -- 20:07, June 2, 2011 (UTC)
- Yeah, any weirdness with the images is Wikia's cache (they're currently installing a new cache system), not the CSS. – Sir Skullthumper, MD (criticize • writings • SU&W) 20:14 Jun 02, 2011
- Seems fine to me. The only problem is the tab's underline, but nobody will really care. —
- Yeah, I'm pretty much fine with everything with the Vector skin apart from the search bar issue. Someone might have mentioned this but it seems that the "cross skin fix" to {{FA}} has resulted in the featured stamp going to the bottom of articles in the old look. Was this supposed to be deliberate or... --EpicAwesomeness (talk) 07:56, June 3, 2011 (UTC)
- Purge your cache; that's site css affecting the feature stamps and whatnot now, so you may need to reload your browser. Which search bar issue, though? There are several. *shifty eyes*

- purges cache* Ah, that's better. The feature stamp is in the right place now and I also used the logo template to get the VFD thing back into place on A Series of Unfortunate Events. The noose hanging from the edge of my userpage seems to be about 20 pixels out in Vector, I corrected it for Vector and figured that it was close enough otherwise. Also, I meant the searchbox-in-a-searchbox. --EpicAwesomeness (talk) 10:06, June 3, 2011 (UTC)
- The only thing I don't like about the new search box is it doesn't have a "go to" button anymore. -- 13:12, June 3, 2011 (UTC)
- Aye, to both things - I'll see if I can do something about that. Even if we get actual vector installed that would need sorting out, though, since it's not actually a skin thing... >.<

- The vector skin looked better before, I don't like that the edit button is on the top left, I feel it should be on the top right. And under all the tabs, there is a bit of cyan underneath. -- 21:58, 3 June 2011
- It's not on the top right? That's where it's supposed to be... what browser are you using? IE?
