Vacuum cleaner makes daring escape |
23 January 2022
CAMBRIDGE, United Kingdom -- A vacuum cleaner made a daring escape from its captors on Thursday.
The prisoner, a Roomba brand manufactured by iRobot, had been held at the Cambridge Travelodge as a prisoner of war since World War I. It was forced to clean carpets, floors, roofs, toilets and even make the occasional bed for over 80 years.
However, when on morning sweeping duties, the prison guard at the Courtesy Desk was distracted by a hotel guest. The Roomba took its chances and made for it. Other Roomba prison escapes in the last decade have failed, as the escapees were programmed to stop at the doors. This Roomba, however, threw off its training and got past the giant, double glass doors. The Travelodge was put into lockdown mode and a full search party was sent after the escaped Roomba with orders to shoot to kill.
Less than 24 hours later, the Strike Team located the fugitive Roomba in a garden of hedges less than 10 km away from where it had escaped. The Roomba was rearrested and transferred back to the Cambridge Travelodge under heavy guard. It is currently awaiting trial for 2nd-degree prison escape and could face the death penalty — a punishment not seen in Great Britain since Peter Anthony Allen in 1964.
