This portrait of new Sultan Loqomotive will replace Qaboos throughout the emirate.

MUSCAT, Oman -- Funeral services are being held for Sultan Qit an-Qaboos of Oman, who died at age 79 on Friday. Qaboos is one of the world’s longest-ruling Arab leaders.

After overthrowing his father in 1970 with the help of Great Britain, Qaboos was credited with modernizing the country — though not so much that there will now be an election or stuff like that. As the sultan left no children, his cousin, Haitham bin Tariq Al Diesel Loqomotive, was appointed as the new leader after a period of furtive glances and a brief gunfight.

Loqomotive praised Oman's progress under Qaboos. "He built a modern country that was noticed by critics before admirers, and created a historical moment and a system of laws that will lay the tracks to a bright future."

Loqomotive takes over in a historical moment when the signals are flashing financial problems and high unemployment, modern laws notwithstanding. Ministers hope for faster progress now that Qaboos has been decoupled.
