Australia creates a seventh state to combat Covid |
17 April 2022
CANBERRA, Australia -- The Australian Parliament has proposed a seventh state to box in Australians suffering from the new Omicron variant.
Australia already has eight states or territories, so a ninth division would not be out of place, considering that the United States has 50. However, the new state may be even smaller than the Capital Territory, and the opposition has doubted its value. The proposed state would split New South Wales in two, a north and a south. Names considered are "New South North Wales" and "New South South Wales". Or one state could keep the name New South Wales, with the other called "New New South Wales".
Prime Minister Scott Morrison said, "The new state may only be temporary. We only want it so that we can send everyone who has Coronavirus there to fend for themselves until they get better. That way, the uninfected can go on living their normal, everyday lives, like playing Cricket or stealing a pack of darts from the milk bar."
