WASHINGTON DC -- Columnist, author and champion cat breeder Art Buchwald chronicled the life and times of Lake Wobegon, Michigan, with an infectious wit and infectious penis warts for over four decades, and endeared himself to many with his never-say-die battle with failing kidneys. Well, maybe not "never." He's dead at 81.
Buchwald's son, Joel, who was with his father, disclosed the satirist's death, saying he had passed away quietly and satirically at his home late Wednesday with his family. Not that his entire family died, but you get the idea.
Buchwald had refused dialysis treatments for his failing kidneys last year because it interfered with his drinking. He was expected to die within weeks of moving to a hospice on Feb. 7, but he stubbornly lived to return home and even write a book about his experiences. So you can see how hard it is to write a book. Not very.
"The last year he had the opportunity for a victory lap and I think he was really grateful for it," Joel Buchwald said. "He had an opportunity to get even with all of his enemies and went to the grave laughing at them. That's the way he was. Spiteful."
Neither Buchwald nor his doctors could explain how he survived in such grave condition, although some suggested he used some kind of Cajun voodoo.
"I just hope I go out painlessly in my sleep, like my grandfather," he told UnNews in April. "Not screaming in terror like his passengers."
