Geekland is a soveriegn state located in Europe ruled by Geeks and dedicated to Open Source government. It's notable exports are amusing t-shirts, the internet, and smelly men in front of computers.
Little is known about this country, or indeed its population, and its citizens are often referred to as "The Great Unwashed". Their presence is however noted all over the Interweb, whose protocols they claim to have singlehandedly invented, and let Al Gore take the credit in a major effort to avoid the paper media, who have actually been outlawed inside Geekland's borders.
The country was created in the aftermath of World War Two, amid much confusion about who would get the remains of the Third Reich. It is known to have had a few rulers since then, declaring itself a Technological Republic in 1951. It is also speculated that the country also played host to some of Nazi Germany's top scientists, who escaped there in the confusion.
The country is nestled in the mountains around the borders of Germany and Italy, and is roughly 150 miles north-south, and roughly the same east-west. The Capital city, Bernersburg is named after Tim Berners-Lee, the prime geek who we all know actually thought up the Interweb. The land, being mountainous, means that the geeks live in mountain cubicles, where they do the work of their gods.
A law passed in 1990 decreed that all technology must be Open Source, and thus follow the ways of their Gods. Any software or hardware found inside the borders of the country that the source is not available to is immediately confiscated and the geek is punished by being forced to sit at a Microsoft loaded computer, for a period of anything up to a week dependent on how bad the incursion was.
Printed media has been outlawed inside Geekland, and the country only has one news website at the moment, The Daily Geek. The geeks are a very seclusionist society and will only listen to their Gods, who proclaims the outside world to be the root of all evil.
The geeks live by a religious law, called the Technologica, which was thought to have been passed to them by their supposedly living Gods of which there are two: Richard Stallman and Linus Torvalds. The geeks pray at their computer terminals by repeating the entire text of the GPL twice a day.
Geekland does not have a Government as such, but does have a leader who speaks for them all, and he is elected every 10 years by the whole population in a democratic way. The title for this position is the Prime Geek, and it's current holder is Tim Berners-Lee. They do have a Religious Council who are selected by the Prime Geek in order to maintain the law, and make policy decisions.
The main currency unit of the Geeks is the Byte, which is roughly equivalent to One Euro forty cents. Although it is thought that currency isn't actually needed inside Geekland as all aspects of society have to be free, as the law dictates. But the Byte is used as a trading Currency to buy in essentials from the outside world, such as computer parts and food. The Geeks resent the fact that the world will not just give them things and are currently attempting to infiltrate other societies across the globe to spread the word about their gods, and thus free the world from the tyranny of the Great Beast.
- Its citizens are known colloquially as Geeks, and its population is thought to be in the thousands.
- The Geeks claim to have invented the interweb is often disputed by Al Gore, who has always claimed it was his idea.
- Geekland has the most advanced technology on the planet in it, and is in fact the real home of CERN.
