A few weeks ago I suggested that every four years will be a World Cup (something that is similar to the FIFA World Cup) in the English wiki. Every wiki will do sort of an internal preliminary World Cup to choose the entries that will be "sent" to the International World Cup in the English wiki. The competition will be just like the original FIFA World Cup (tournament), Country Versus Country until the finals.

The rules of the competition:

  1. Every wiki will choose two articles that will be represented it in the competition.
  2. The articles that will be chosen must have an international humor, so everybody could understand it.
  3. The articles that will be chosen must be written or translated to English, so anyone could understand the humor and the sophistication of them. For example, if in the Dutch wiki there is a witty and funny article, the Dutch users need to translate it to English, so the whole world could enjoy it.
  4. Every wiki must pick one user that will represent the wiki in the World Cup. This user will represent his wiki and all the articles that were created in his wiki and will be in the competition. In addition, this user's English has to be very good - he must know how to write in properly English because he will translate the articles from his wiki. Besides, this user will take part in the votes and will promote the levels of the World Cup, even if his wiki articles will not take part in the next level.
  5. The World Cup will always start on June 20.
  6. Near every article there would be the article's home country flag (if the wiki doesn't have a home country she has to make a fictional flag), so there would be no confusion between two articles with the same name. For example, if both Norwegian and Japanese wikis have an article in the World Cup about Genghis Khan, there will be the flag of Norway near the Norwegian article and there will be the flag of Japan near the Japanese article.
  7. If the wiki's language is spoken in more than one country or in some countries, (for example, the English wiki, the French wiki, the Spanish wiki, the Portuguese wiki, the German wiki Etc.) the flag of this wiki will be the flag of its home country. For example, the French wiki will have the flag of France.
  8. Above every wiki will be written the language of that wiki in English (for those who don't know the differences between the Slovenian flag and the Slovakian flag).
  9. Translated articles from English or from other languages mustn't participate the World Cup.

So, what do you think about it? Something is written over here / Tell me here what was written 15:13, July 31, 2014 (UTC)

I think it's a great idea! Until 2018 we can make a great project out of this idea. Israel is here! Daemon Israel.JPG 15:52, July 31, 2014 (UTC)
So youse are really discussing a project that won't occur until 2018? This wiki has no active Admins in common with 2010, and you might be talking to a completely different set of people in 2018. Rather than fixate on the next real World Cup, it might be better to call it something different (2016 Wiki Olympiad or 2014 Wiki World Cup) and start sooner.
Repeating points I made on my talk page: (1) That an article be of interest to international readers should not be a rule but merely an obvious consideration that will guide voters for their website's nominees; and (2) I will be especially vigilant to ensure that no one uses the next "inter-wiki competition" as a pretense to induce our people to leave our website.
This sounds like a fun idea with which our Admins would be happy to participate. But even if no one here participated, you could start now and take some or all of our "Best of 2013" as our "nominees" for foreign writers to throw their best against. Or forget synchronizing it with a real-world event and, in March 2015, play our "Best of 2014" against the world's best wiki articles. Spıke Ѧ

Sounds like an interesting idea. --Laurels.gifRomArtus*Imperator ITRA (Orate) ® 16:22, August 1, 2014 (UTC)

I don't care about the date of the World Cup. I just want us all to have an international competition. Something is written over here / Tell me here what was written 10:56, August 2, 2014 (UTC)
I'm all for it. Sir ScottPat (converse) White Ensign.gif Scotland Flag 1.png Compassrose.gif VFH UnS NotM WotM WotY 11:21, August 2, 2014 (UTC)
It's a great idea. I hope there are enough wikis willing to join the Cup. Anton (talk) 12:32, August 15, 2014 (UTC)

Voting

  1. On what are voting? Symbol for vote.svg For. or Symbol against vote.svg Against. the World Cup or for or against the rules? I am Symbol for vote.svg For. the World Cup in general but I think it should be a lot sooner than 2018 and the rules should be changed a bit (per Spike's suggestions, for example). Anton (talk) 19:37, August 15, 2014 (UTC)
o.k. You can change the date of the world cup. I suggest the World Cup will begin on June 20, 2015. Something is written over here / Tell me here what was written 08:46, August 16, 2014 (UTC)
I agree. Concerning the rules, I'll work on them in my userspace and will show you the result when I'm done. Anton (talk) 10:42, August 16, 2014 (UTC)
Could you do it here? Something is written over here / Tell me here what was written 13:12, August 16, 2014 (UTC)

I've massaged your rules in Anton199's userspace, but another quibble: After all the text about which national flag or fictional flag to use (currently at rule 4) the next rule concedes that some people won't be able to tell flags apart anyway, and adds that the language of the wiki be rendered in English. How about ditching the rule on flags and just having the submission appear in a table along with the name of the wiki in English? Allow the national-language flag to appear as an icon if the submitter wishes. Spıke Ѧ 13:58 16-Aug-14

I've changed them even more. You're welcome to look at the result. I have another question, however: is it necessary that only one user translates the articles of its wiki to English? I think it will be more interesting for readers and writers if the translation was a collaboration between the users who speak English. Then the event will concern the entire wiki. Plus, the quality of the translation will probably be better. Anton (talk) 15:47, August 16, 2014 (UTC)
