I'd like to take a voluntary vacation from featuring because I'm lazy like that. I have no idea how long it would be. It's just gotten to be too much of a hassle to update things every night, so if someone would like to take over for me for an indefinite length of time I would be eternally grateful. I'll update and reprint the directions for featuring images and articles below. Admins only, because a lot of the necessary pages are protected.

Featured article - updated every night
  1. Firstly, add .featurecode { display: inline !important; color:black; } to your user CSS. This will let you see two very important things: the code for the {{FA}} template (which is listed on the {{VFH}} template) and the "Feature/Remove" links in the new VFH.
  2. Update template:Featuredarticle with a blurb from the article on VFH that has the highest number of votes. Transfer the previous featured article to the second slot in the template. Don't forget to update the images and links!
  3. Click the green "Feature" link in the article's VFH nomination. This link should be visible (so long as you followed #1 above) on the full and summarized VFH pages and on each nomination page. It will go to the edit screen which already has the featuring template loaded. Just save the page.
  4. Update Uncyclopedia:Best of. Now it's Automatic.
  5. Add template:FA to the new featured article. Check the VFH template on the page and, if you followed #1, it should display something like "{{FA|revision=2199507|date=15 July 2007}}". Just add that code to the page in place of the VFH template. I hope that makes sense.

Featured image - updated every third night, assuming there is an image that has at least +8. If there is not, just go with no featured image.
  1. Create a page at template:FI/imagename (for example, Template:FI/Pigletmugshot.jpg). Copy the code for the page I just linked and replace it with whatever you need for the new featured image, which is whatever has the highest vote count on VFP.
  2. Add the new image to Template:FI/all (just following the coding conventions there).
  3. Update template:FI by: adding the weight of the "CURRENTLY FEATURED" image to the total weight; downgrading the old featured image weight to the "CURRENTLY FEATURED" weight; changing the "CURRENTLY FEATURED" weight to whatever the new image's vote count is; adding the actual code for the new image, giving it a weight of half of the total weight.
  4. Move the voting section for the new featured image to "Previously Featured" on VFP.
  5. Add template:ImageFP to the image page.
  6. Protect the new image. No need, now auto-protected. Spang talk 03:12, 26 Jul 2007
  7. Add template:FP to the artist's userpage. (Ex.: {{FP|Image=Pigletmugshot.jpg}})
  8. Add the artist to the CUN section of Order of Uncyclopedia IF he/she is not already a Commander or higher.
  9. Create a page at Uncyclopedia:PFP/imagename (ex. Uncyclopedia:PFP/Pigletmugshot.jpg). Copy the code for the page I just linked and replace it with whatever you need for the new image, using the voting from VFP.
  10. Add the page you just created to Uncyclopedia:PFP/006.

I think that should be everything. Let me know if anything is unclear. Until someone offers to take over, I'll keep updating... so please, someone offer soon. I will probably still be around Uncyc, featuring has just gotten to be a real drag. —rc (t) 02:07, 15 July 2007 (UTC)

I can probably take over at VFH, at least for a while. I can't promise I'll catch it every night, but I'll to get her around 6PM central (that's midnight Britain time). If I haven't done it by midnight eastern (or 9PM Pacific), you can safely assume I've missed it and someone else can get it.--<<Bradmonogram.png>> 02:38, 15 July 2007 (UTC)
Excellent, Brad is my hero. Someone else can be my other hero by taking care of VFP... —rc (t) 02:48, 15 July 2007 (UTC)
I could also do that also, probably. Just let me know if you want me to do it any night, or more often. Spang talk 03:14, 15 Jul 2007
Are you talking about updating VFP or helping Brad? —rc (t) 04:16, 16 July 2007 (UTC)
I'll be the third wheel of this operation. So, basically, all the coffee and donughts are mine. Also, I get a t-shirt whith my name on the back. -- Brigadier General Sir Zombiebaron 04:19, 16 July 2007 (UTC)
Sorry Zombie, but the guys who print the T-shirts said your name was too long. We told them to print it anyway, and it came out "Zombiebar", hope that's ok...--<<Bradmonogram.png>> 12:18, 16 July 2007 (UTC)
It'll do. At least it's better then your shirt. I mean "Bradaphra"? It sounds like something that Olipro would say, and then pass off as "British slang". -- Brigadier General Sir Zombiebaron 01:37, 17 July 2007 (UTC)
Either. Though last time I did vfp I didn't do it right. But I'm way betterer now. Spang talk 10:00, 16 Jul 2007
Well, there's an image on VFP that has +8, so if you'd like to start tonight... —rc (t) 22:28, 16 July 2007 (UTC)
Done, but that was the worst ever. I don't think we should have featured images any more. Or at least use a system that isn't so damn complicated! Spang talk 03:56, 17 Jul 2007
Now you know why I'm so happy when there aren't any good images on VFP... —rc (t) 04:03, 17 July 2007 (UTC)
You forgot the most important part of article-featuring Rc:

Well, okay, maybe I was just being a bit too naive there... --Strange.PNG (but) Untrue  Whhhy?Whut? How? *Back from the dead* 17:23, 16 July 2007 (UTC)
Assuming good faith... honestly Sbu, you should be ashamed of yourself. ;)--<<Bradmonogram.png>> 19:57, 16 July 2007 (UTC)
Hehe - never seen that page before. I assumed you were linking to Uncyclopedia:Assume bad faith at first. --Strange.PNG (but) Untrue  Whhhy?Whut? How? *Back from the dead* 23:36, 16 July 2007 (UTC)

Automate!

Isn't it time we had this happening (semi)automatically or something? All that fancy {{current date}} or whatever to make the article change at midnight. Then we could queue a load up, and all go on a break. Yay! - sannse<staff/> (talk) 15:05, 15 July 2007 (UTC)

I wouldn't be opposed to such an idea...--<<Bradmonogram.png>> 21:12, 15 July 2007 (UTC)
I was going to say: "why haven't we automated this yet?". With all the strapping young programmers about, I would have expected this to be done by now. I'd pitch in on it, but I've been freakishly busy at work, and it probably won't die down at all for another two or three weeks (I could get sent to some rancid eastern shithole that they call a city if something goes wrong, too)... Dawg.gif » Brig Sir Dawg | t | v | c » 2007.07.16.03:53
But in any case we wouldn't want to queue too far in advance. VFH changes all the time. Also, Olipro worked up a prototype for this. —rc (t) 04:14, 16 July 2007 (UTC)
If we changed the rules for a while so the top two were tagged for featuring each day, it wouldn't be long before we had a decent queue of articles waiting for their day on the main page. Then once we had, say, a week or two's worth stored up we could go to a rule of "one a day promoted, unless there are spaces in the queue to fill". The worst consequence of this I can see, is that people would have to wait a week or whatever after getting the votes for the article to be on the main page. Everyone except Mhallie should be able to cope with that... -- sannse<staff/> (talk) 09:23, 16 July 2007 (UTC)

I ginned something up real quick after reading Forum:Dummy admin account for extra special users?. See User:Ekashp/Featuredarticle. It's just a template that includes another template depending on {{CURRENTYEAR}}{{CURRENTMONTH}}{{CURRENTDAY}}. I'd suggest using it for the front page, to at least insure that it moves about seamlessly. The rest of the template-fiddling can be done manually at leisure, I'd imagine. Automating Uncyclopedia:Best of

I've done it here using DPL. I tried to use the dates the articles were added to category:featured to divide it by year, but that won't work for several reasons. One of them: if you blank a page and restore it, DPL uses the date of restoration, the date the category is added back. The only way I can think of is making three categories, one for each year. Easiest way would be replacing Template:FA, with Template:FA05, Template:FA06 and Template:FA07, each of them adding the page to the propper categories. Tedious work, but once we finish nobody has to edit UN:BEST ever again. Ignoring the division by years is also a possibility.

The automation has some flaws though. It doesn't look good on lower resolutions or with bigger text sizes. It would be easy to infiltrate an unnoticed article into the list, just by adding it to one of the listed categories. Of course, today adding template:FA to an article without anyone noticing isn't hard either, but at least they don't just show up at UN:BEST. I can't think of any way to overcome this and still keep it automatic. I still think it would be worth to implement it. Thoughts?---Asteroid B612B612.jpg (aka Rataube) - Ñ 09:39, 27 July 2007 (UTC)

Also, the runners-up section is finished. We can start by trying that one out if you all agree. One problem: is even easier to sneak articles into thissection. The only way to check wich ones shuld really be there is checking VFH's history (and all the rejected nominations pages of the new system). With the featured article is easier couse we have Template:Featured's history (Still not that easy).---Asteroid B612B612.jpg (aka Rataube) - Ñ 09:58, 27 July 2007 (UTC)

Hmm... Sounds good to me, but I'm not sure what you'll need me to do at this point.--<<Bradmonogram.png>> 11:38, 27 July 2007 (UTC)
If we don't care about the division by year or we are too lazy, all you have to do is replace UN:BEST's lists with the code from user:Rataube/Sandbox.
If we don't want to give up the division by years and still make it automatic from now on, we have to:
  1. Create Category:Featured in 2005, Category:Featured in 2006, Category:Featured in 2007.
  2. Replace UN:BEST's code with User:Rataube/Sandbox2's code
  3. Replace Template:FA's code with user:Rataube/FA's code. (Only step that has to be done by an admin).
  4. Go to each previosly featured article and change {{FA|revision=number|date=day month 200x}} with {{FA|revision=number|date=day month|year=200x}}. In other words, replace the space between the month and the year with |year=. This one is the tedious step.
  5. Go to Template:VFH and replace date={{CURRENTDAY}} {{CURRENTMONTHNAME}} {{CURRENTYEAR}} with date={{CURRENTDAY}} {{CURRENTMONTHNAME}}|year={{CURRENTYEAR}}}}. In other words, replace the space between {{CURRENTMONTHNAME}} and {{CURRENTYEAR}} with |year=. With this last step every new featured article should be authomaticaly placed into [[Cateogry:Featured in {{CURRENTYEAR}}]]. ---Asteroid B612B612.jpg (aka Rataube) - Ñ 21:21, 27 July 2007 (UTC)
Listed here is every featured article, with correct featuring date, in a sortable list. The long number before the date is only so it sorts the dates correctly, and would be removed in a best of situation, as sorting is unpossible with several columns anyway.
Do not change any of the date functions in {{FA}}, it is used in a few other important places which would break if changed in the ways you suggest.
It is possible to do by adding only one link to {{FA}}, and changing the DPL code a bit. I'll knock that up in a bit, though it won't work straight away, as it'll take a day or two for all the links to update. Unless someone wants to null edit every single featured article. Spang talk 10:14, 27 Jul 2007
Ok. If we ever get string functions, we can retrieve the last four charachters of the date and use them to generate Category:Featured in XXXX without changing the template's parameters.---Asteroid B612B612.jpg (aka Rataube) - Ñ 22:35, 27 July 2007 (UTC)
Ok, it's properly working now. See here. Feel free to move it over. Spang talk 08:09, 28 Jul 2007
Done.---Asteroid B612B612.jpg (aka Rataube) - Ñ 20:10, 28 July 2007 (UTC)

Old chatter

I won't be around tomorrow (Saturday) night so I need someone to update the featured article. See here for instructions. The featured image also needs to be changed but I don't have time, so I'll take care of that when I get back Sunday. THANKS —rc (t) 05:31, 26 May 2007 (UTC)

I'll get it.--<<Bradmonogram.png>> 14:02, 26 May 2007 (UTC)
You would! Spang talk 12:06, 27 May 2007

I got the featured image for you too, RC, and I think I might have actually done it right (though you'll obviously want to check me to make sure).--<<Bradmonogram.png>> 02:42, 27 May 2007 (UTC)

Thanks Brad - I'll check things when I get the chance later tonight. —rc (t) 02:06, 28 May 2007 (UTC)
