Forum:Gmail for our domain
Hello everyone. I was just looking aroung on the interweb, when I came across this slashdot article (no it's not about us). However Gmail is having a beta test here and i figured some people might be interested in having @uncyclopedia.org email adresses. I know I would, if only for the novelty. Anywho, I didn't want to go ahead and do anything, plus I don't understand the specifics. I guess we need to tell them how many emails we want, so sign your name below if you want one, and we can work out what we need to do. --Brigadier General Sir Zombiebaron 20:17, 26 February 2006 (UTC)
- I am opposed to this because it might look official coming from someone that uses the site. Possibly for admins, but certainly not for everyone. 20:44, 26 February 2006 (UTC)
- Also opposed. --Algorithm (talk) 22:39, 26 February 2006 (UTC)
- I want one, but I agree it should be for Admins only. -- 23:19, 26 February 2006 (UTC)
- I see your point, but maybe a few nonadmins could be a special exeption, such as me, and Tompkins. --Brigadier General Sir Zombiebaron 00:07, 27 February 2006 (UTC)
- I want one, but I agree it should be for Admins only. -- 23:19, 26 February 2006 (UTC)
- I already have one! Ahahaha! But I'll go for one for my username, I guess? Meh. --KATIE!! 00:51, 27 February 2006 (UTC)
- codeine@uncyclopedia.org? Ooh, yes please. With bells and a cherry on top. But yes, due to the official-looking nature, I agree with the "admins only" plan. -- Sir Codeine K·H·P·B·M·N·C·U·Bu. · (Harangue) 11:00, 27 February 2006 (UTC)
- Agreed with Dawg. Despite me not being an admin, I think that it could be misleading if someone got an email from lugiatm@uncyclopedia.org --officer designate Lugiatm MUN NS CM ZM WH 15:52, 27 February 2006 (UTC)
- I understand the "admins only" policy, but the only problem is that if you go to the second step, it asks for the number of accounts needed. This will not take into account (heh I said account twice) for new admins. It isn't really possible to determine the amount of new admins that could come in at any moment. This could pose problems. Since this is a beta test though, we could tell google about this problem. I still think that non-admins who sign below (currently me Loogie and Tompky) should be included in the initial sign up of people. --Brigadier General Sir Zombiebaron 18:02, 27 February 2006 (UTC)
- In that case I don't think it should be done at all. We can still provide email proxies to those who want it, as we did for Cthulu. --Algorithm (talk) 20:16, 27 February 2006 (UTC)
- I say we should do it and try to get enough accounts for all admins PLUS A FEW EXTRA as I said before for potential future admins. I reallyreallyreaaaallly want savethemooses@uncyclopedia.org -- 23:12, 27 February 2006 (UTC)
- I'd also reallyreallyreaaaallly like one, but I'm ok with the admin rule I guess. Idk maybe if you didn't have to specify how many you wanted, would be to hand them out to respected Uncyclopedia member (not that I'm respected, I guess I meant "the ones you know won't freakout and spam random users.") t o m p k i n s blah. ﺞوﻦ וףה ՃՄ ண்ஸ ފއހ วอฏม +տ trade websites 23:21, 27 February 2006 (UTC)

- heres a thought, if you guys are so worried about people pretending to be admins and doing silly things....(which ima sure the admins will manage to by themself(and if they dont, shame on them)) why dont you give your usernames some sort of extra bit. Like a Admin_Dawg or Admin_keitei. Because clearly prank emails are not in the spirit of uncyclopedia. \:| --Da, Y?YY?YYY?:-:CUN3 NotM BLK |_LG8+::: 07:49, 11 February 2006 (UTC)
- Good point Y+++. However, like cody and the others, I'd be more comfortable if we leave it admins-only for now.--Sir Flammable KUN (Na Naaaaa...) 21:01, 28 February 2006 (UTC)

- Just a thought, but what about the usage of subdomains? For example, you could have godnamehere@uncyclopedia.org, adminnamehere@admin.uncyclopedia.org, usernamehere@user.uncyclopedia.org, etc...
That way it would be clearly delineated by the e-mail address what level of authority could be attached to the address. and if someone is promoted, just change the subdomain of their addy, demoted, the same... --Mindsunwound: (MUN) Crotch Drops Dog Fart Trombone 17:52, 1 March 2006 (UTC)
I'm with the admins only, and as savethemooses said, a few could be set aside for future admins. Subdomains would be ugly and confusing, (adminspintherism@uncyclopedia.org don't look so nice, and doesn't in any way solve the authority problem. Unless the two are directly compared, user@domain doesn't look any less credible than adminuser@domain. And preferential treatment of certain non-admin users would only lead to strife and discord. --Spintherism not signed in
- My counter to that would be that with subdomains, the only ones that would need to be ugly and confusing would be the @users.uncyclopedia.org ones, and who cares about Users? It's not like they're real people or anything... --Mindsunwound: (MUN) Crotch Drops Dog Fart Trombone 00:23, 2 March 2006 (UTC)

Really, it would just be unreliable temporary vanity, even for Admins. And annoying too, if after you gave it out to your friends (hah, like you lot have friends... sigh), you might have to retract it and give them your old address. --Splaka 01:29, 2 March 2006 (UTC)

Here's the definitive on this. I applied with google for this a long time ago and they never got back to me. So, it's a no go thusfar. --Chronarion 23:38, 1 March 2006 (UTC)
