I have just been post-edited at Wikipedia by an editor who cited MOS:EMDASH of the Wikipedia Manual Of Style. Wikipedia calls for no spaces before and after em-dashes—as shown here. I have been corrected by various Uncyclopedians on this, and I have fallen into the habit of spacing before and after them — like this. This style seems sensible because if the word before and after is long, the whole thing would wrap as a unit and might look ugly. However, one goal of this website is to superficially imitate Wikipedia, including its style. What should we do?

(Separately, anyone reading this please note that I have added guidance at Help:HowTo#Lists to avoid putting blank lines between items in bulleted lists. Wikipedia at MOS:LISTGAP has a good reason for this, which I point to.) Spıke 🎙️02:57 28-Nov-16

I think this is one thing we don't need to copy from wikipedia. Otherwise I will think it is a double barrelled name. --Laurels.gifRomArtus*Imperator ITRA (Orate) ® 14:30, December 13, 2016 (UTC)

UncyclopediaWikipedia. We do things differently here because we're not total copycats.

Memo: We documented this decision at UN:STYLE § Dashes — with a spiffy new template to tag all the points in our Style Manual that are not exactly Wikipedia. Spıke 🎙️20:39 18-Jan-22
