MLP:FIM

Actually rocks.--Iwillkillyou.gif 333.gif TALK What's it like to be a heretic? 23:50, November 1, 2011 (UTC)

You DO realize you're just being fooled by the system, right?

@Frosty @TheSlyFox I have no problem with you guys being bronies, as long as I'm not and as long as I'm not forced to against my will. I actually watched an episode, and I thought it was pretty cool... until I took off my 3D glasses. Still, it's won third place in my award for "Coolest-looking non-3D thing to be watched with 3D glasses," right after The Beatles: Yellow Submarine and those Facebook photos of your mom. And under my standards, that's quite an honor.

Anyway, I'd argue with the "love and tolerance" beliefs of MLP, except my school was born on those same rules. (They have no idea that I go on Uncyc.) And I don't want to have to denounce my hatred of MLP completely. Plus, I agree with the ideas, but I just don't like the show. It's good animation, sure. But you do realize that, before Friendship is Magic, the only My Little Pony anybody had heard of were dolls made by Hasbro?

Yes, MLP:FiM may seem innocent at the moment, but you know what? Take away the "love and tolerance" and it's revealed: That TV show's just trying to get you to buy their product. In fact, if their show is all about love and tolerance, the fact that their show hasn't devolved into Barney-esque plots just shows that they're only in it for the money.

I'm not trying to change your opinion or anything, I'm just trying you to make sure you know that you are being fooled by the system. ~[thehappyspaceman] mightfirehislazer 23:37, 10/31/2011

No worries THS, your opinion is welcome here. In fact, I've been waiting for this "discussion thread" to turn into something more intelligent. I've always known about the paradox of how most all of the things I grew up loving and adoring were only there to extract money from its viewers. Not all that many years ago, I grew up watching hazy antenna broadcasts of Pokemon and Action Man. My parents could not afford cable television or any of the merchandise, so I always told myself how I wasn't missing out on anything--all the production companies wanted me to do is buy their stuff, anyway. Today, I have to understand that even Star Trek only exists for the same purpose (Gene Roddenberry has long since passed on, and his absence is all too clear in the "reboot").

Eventually, I also had to realize that these things are a part of the culture we live in. In a capitalist culture, it seems the only way to get a practical message out is to embed it in some sort of commercial product. I dream of a Roddenberry-esque utopia as much as any Trekkie. I create drawings and am currentlywriting and recording my own music, posting it all online for free because I don't believe art should cost anything. Even so, the fact of the matter is the world simply is not ready for that sort of thing yet. If we want the world to change, we have to celebrate every step forward, no matter how small. I consider MLP to be a step forward, simply because I was inspired by it. I was actually inspired to better connect with friends after seeing it. Dare I say that stuff like this is actually a refresher on some of those kindergarten lessons we've forgotten over the years?

So yes, I'm aware of the commercial aspect here, but that's not what counts; what people make of it is what counts. All the MTV crap out there is just a step backwards (the only message it carries is "I've got money! You should have money! Celebrities have money! Three cheers for money!"). The last decade was utterly useless for quality entertainment. I seriously thought American television was dead. I decided to forgo my cable subscription long ago for this very reason, and have not since renewed it. I would just like to hope we have something different on our hands now. If something like a commercial television program can serve as a vehicle for a message and stimulate thought and creativity, then it has done its job as a quality work of art--it's original commercial purpose is moot.

......That, and I think it's utterly ridiculous that grown men watch a show intended for little girls. I think it's great fun in a wacky sort of way. -- Tinypony.gif Sir "TheSlyPony" Invariably certifiable. 02:46 November 1, 2011 (UTC)
And this is why I don't watch MTV. Well, not anymore. I used to watch it when it actually played MUSIC. But back to the subject at hand...

You are right that Star Trek is out for the money too. It's just that... I don't know... there's a difference. With shows like Star Trek, it starts up and then toys are made because people love the show and request merchandise. For My Little Pony, however, the toys were already made but no one was buying them. So they made a show and formed a cult of "bronies" who will spend sh'loads of money on the products because the shows is "great."

And also, I agree with MLP's message of love and tolerance, as I said before. But MLP is entirely about love and tolerance, and with all that love and tolerance, there's no room for an actual plot or character development. This is because the creators don't want to waste their oh-so-precious money on actually getting people to write good scenarios. With Star Trek (or at least in TOS, TNG, DS9 and VOY), even though they're in it for the money, they actually put some effort into it.

And I'm glad you want this thread to turn into something more intelligent. The lack of originality has been haunting me recently. (Why post a bunch of "My Mom"'s anyway?) ~[ths] UotM My Farticles. Gobshite of the Month March 2012 Magician of the Month March 2012 Uncyclopedian of the Month November 2012 19:40, 11/01/2011
P.S.- The plots are also somewhat unrealistic. I mean, every single character (except recurring characters Q Discord and Mary-sue Spike) is a female. So with no males, how do they reproduce?
Um, wow. Actual intelligence in an Uncyc discussion. Anyway, I'm also in the "not a brony, but not a hater either" category. I don't mind that so many people outside the target demographic are fans, and I'm actually stunned by all the fan works out there, some that could even pass as legit episodes (see Peckish Pony 2 for a good example), yet I just don't really feel that the show appeals to me that much. I'll let the bronies have their fun, maybe even hang out ocassionally, but I'm just going to stay on the sidelines. Love and Tolerate, but don't drag everyone else in with you.
And obligatory nitpick: shouldn't the forum title be "herd of ponies"? --BLU Scoutgineer 00:19, November 2, 2011 (UTC)
Who cares if it's associated with a product? Is the show still there? Yes? Well then. --HM (T) 19:58, November 1, 2011 (UTC)
