Discussion during development of replacement version[edit]
I checked the article again. So the suggestion is we try and save it. OK. Well one idea could be that Noah Webster is the true founder of Hmor - the Our/Or division between British and American English spelling is always the one that stands out. However, I had a thought and we could try out this idea:-
- The American Revolution was on the issue of how to spell Humor/Humour. The Americans rebelled. Those who kept spelling it Humour were exiled to Canada. Noah Webster then made this an Article of Faith in American English. The citizens of Hmor took this edict literally and removed the letter U from everything. Here I am using the example of the schisms in Christianity which were also about a single letter - in this case the Catholic-Arian dispute of the 4th century. THe article on Hmor could then top and tail with an explanation behind the story - with the middle part in Hmorese.
I did have another idea - similar to the one in the book 1984 where the Ministry of Truth that eradicates words and changes the language in an attempt to destroy ideas.--RomArtus*Imperator ® (Orate) 13:37, January 11, 2010 (UTC)
- Two good ones, thanks. My own notion was a little less epic, as in this proposed new intro:
- Paul Studdard was a minor copy-rewriter for a technical editing firm in London's East End when Wikia took it over and mandated dropping the excess letters that Brits add to words like 'color.' Studdard tragically over-reacted to this edict for the rest of his short professional career. Later, on an ocean voyage that was shipwrecked off the coast of Indochina, Studdard finally got the chance to effect his ideas into practice, creating a nation on his island home that he named Hmor. The name may have reflected his sense of good cheer, or the fact that the island's natives were of the Hmong tribe (and many were hmongos).
- But your American Revolution idea is good to set the table for the original variation in spelling. Now what I need is a bunch of words that conveniently become other words when the u is removed. The problem I wanted to solve is that simply pulling a national history out of a bodily orifice and striking out the u's is nothing clever. Also need a real surname, in place of Studdard, that becomes transformed in a notable way when written without the u. Spıke Ѧ 13:53 11-Jan-10 post-edited PS--Give ourselves style points if the entire article can be written without the use of the letter u.
I think my American revolution idea is a separate beast now which could link to this one. Was this in West Hmor or East Hmor (a Timorous/Timorese jokette). --RomArtus*Imperator ® (Orate) 14:12, January 11, 2010 (UTC)
- American Revolution is fully developed--but "War of Independence" (which contains no u's) is available, currently just a redirect. Spıke Ѧ 14:17 11-Jan-10
- I think Hmor is already looking a lot better. Perhaps better we edit at different times though ! --RomArtus*Imperator ® (Orate) 17:22, January 11, 2010 (UTC)
- Romartus--The Cape of Good Hmor should be against the letters D and Q (hope it's not necessary to spell out Dairy Queen). Ultimately, the section on Censorship should be a subsection of "Hmor today" and precede "Torism" to be included in the said nuisances that torists accept. Spıke Ѧ 18:32 11-Jan-10
- That is a better idea. I am going to leave the article for now and return to look at it again tomorrow morning (my time). --RomArtus*Imperator ® (Orate) 18:55, January 11, 2010 (UTC)
It's in mainspace now[edit]
...following a 5-0 Delete vote on VFD, so our change history replaces the original. It describes the changes I made overnight. Spıke Ѧ 23:28 11-Jan-10
I just dotted your A.D. But Council of Nicaea is a red-link; is that what you meant? Also, your clause about Knave versus Jack goes very far afield; would you care to mince words? Spıke Ѧ 18:04 12-Jan-10
It was to do with the U and Non U word idea about class by Nancy Mitford.
- I just thought the stuff about playing cards got off-topic. After deleting that, Mitford's assertion about the aristocracy is adjacent to Hmor's decision to ban the aristocracy.
Also shouldn't GMOR have one the boxes - the at-a-glance guide for all countries? --RomArtus*Imperator ® (Orate) 18:19, January 13, 2010 (UTC)
- The template for Asian countries contains links to articles. We assert that Hmor, East Hmor, and Good Hmor are countries, but there aren't (yet) articles, so the latter two shouldn't go into the template. Also, you need to shuffle the illustrations, so the Mitford photo goes into the section on Censorship.
- Elsewhere on VFD, I call for your help on the replacement User:SPIKE/Gondola, but it's pretty much complete unless you see compelling new areas. I have no doubt that the original Gondola is going down, so I'll just slide this one in. Spıke Ѧ 18:29 13-Jan-10
The footnote[edit]
My dear Romartus, your Footnote 1 makes it way too obvious what the secret of this article is. You don't give it away totally, but I thought I had done it more subtly with the (pink) template at the bottom of the article, which is now cheek-and-jowl against your footnote. They don't both need to be there, but one of them must, as fair warning to future editors to get with the program. Spıke Ѧ 01:05 14-Jan-10
- We are making the same joke in two different ways. I don't mind, keep your template and we can delete footnote. --RomArtus*Imperator ® (Orate) 13:28, January 15, 2010 (UTC)
Hmor's leadership?[edit]
Re-reading the article, who is Hmor's leader today. Is it the North Korea of lexicography? Kim Pal Hose? --RomArtus*Imperator ® (Orate) 14:46, November 29, 2010 (UTC)
- We don't seem to say. Perhaps by a jnta? Spıke Ѧ 15:19 29-Nov-10
- There were the infamous Letter Trials and confessions (The Deviant Letterists). Or is it a republic, a Republic of 25 Letters (rather than just a Republic). I was thinking along the lines of Swift's Lilliput story where they go to war against their neighbour Blefuscu, regards which end of the egg to crack at breakfast. The Big and Little Enders. --RomArtus*Imperator ® (Orate) 16:05, November 29, 2010 (UTC)
