I'm not wanting to let USP rest yet, so I'm thinking we should change this to a monthly periodical. Anyone have any other ideas?                               Puppy's talk page00:40, June 5, 2009 Saturday, 02:24, May 22 2010 UTC

Woah, that thing is still going on? I dunno. Maybe the format could use some changing around. First off, what are the biggest difficulties that arise in keeping USP going? What about the hardest bits to write?  Sir Skullthumper, MD (criticize  writings  SU&W) 03:12 May 22, 2010
How can I helps? Could I have a random thoughts section?  Avast Matey!!! Happytimes are here!* Happytimes.gif (talk) (stalk) Π   ~ Xkey280.jpg ~  22 May 2010 ~ 03:47 (UTC)
I still have ideas, if I could get a response...  Sir Skullthumper, MD (criticize  writings  SU&W) 23:15 May 26, 2010
Sorry - been snowed under with IC and PLS along with a few other things. The major issue is trying to get people to contribute and to deliver the USP. I'm also limited by my internet access at the moment so I'm struggling to get on. As for changing the format - it's been that way for the last 2 years, and if we finally decide to keep this alive then that will definitely be on the cards. The reality is though that a monthly USP makes more sense than a weekly one from a logistical point, and most news is reported through talk-pages and other forums anyway, so USP would simply be a summary of what has been happening.
The other thing I would like to do is set this up so that rather than delivering this through to everyone, we simply change the one page and people can go and see the latest version. The delivery of this is a bastard and no-one wants to do it. Given Opty's choice to have penii on his talk page and the sheer volume of users who want a copy of this, there are too many problems with delivery.                               Puppy's talk page00:40, June 5, 2009 Thursday, 00:44, May 27 2010 UTC
I made the format in the first place, and I see one huge issue with it: Articles. We don't need articles, not anymore. Everyone's rather verbose these days. Instead, we need a selection of links; something that a user, if you will, can come back after a week and catch up on Uncyclopedia's latest and greatest. For example, most active forum topics, most notable feature, noted controversies, et cetera.
The UnSignpost's goal is to allow users who have been away a bit (that might even be a day or two) to catch up. Lots of shit goes on that you can miss just because it's not in Recent Changes. Thought I should clarify that.
So make it links-only; you may get more submissions that way. And the delivery system is just stupid these days. Originally it was a way of marketing the thing so people, upon reading other peoples' talkpages, would see it and go "Wow. There is a thing here. There definitely is." and start paying attention to it. But we don't need to deliver the whole thing anymore. Just a link would do. It'd stop it from cluttering everyone's talkpages up and taking forever to load.
You guys really need to designate delivery to someone with a bot, and someone who'll stick to it. It's nigh impossible without a bot. That was the only way I did it in the beginning, and it's also why the subscription page is formatted the way it is - so someone with a bot can go in, build a list of pages they want to edit from the links, and the rest is just a matter of pushing a button. So yes. Bots, and make it a link instead of the whole paper.  Sir Skullthumper, MD (criticize  writings  SU&W) 00:50 May 27, 2010
Bots. Yeah, there's an idea. Except that MrN had the only really reliable one, and he hasn't been seen in longer than I haven't been seen. Other bots and bot owners have popped up, but no-one's really stuck around. So people have hand-delivered it. I'd love to see a regular, reliable delivery bot. Any suggestions?
I don't want the USP to die, but I haven't had time to do anything on here for ages, and apart from Pup turning his hand to it occasionally, the only people who've done more than an issue or two in the last year are me and Gerry, and he's not been seen for ages either. So I'd say the single biggest problem with the paper is finding people to write it when the regulars are missing. Oh, people drop ideas in the press room on occasion, but they don't then go on to do much with them. Maybe making it links-only is the answer, but I'd like to think not. I always liked the idea that it was more than just links, much as links-only would be easier. Maybe reduce the amount of blurb, make it more concise, less dependent on blatant filler and hackneyed in-jokes, fine.
Maybe the original intent was just to give people something to help them catch up, but that wasn't what I enjoyed about it, and that wasn't what made me want to take it on when you and Cajek were elsewhere. But I'd like to think people have enjoyed some of the extra wibble we've added, and that's one of the reasons it continued as long as it has. Might just be my vanity thinking that though, so I'm open to being proved wrong. I'm hoping that my workload will ease soon, and I'll be able to come back and get on with what I used to do, which includes working on the Signpost. But if you guys want to re-invent it while I'm out, have fun, and I'll look forward to seeing what's happened when I get back!

I don't know what the answer is. I may have to work out at some stage how to set up a bot, but haven't gotten to it yet. I don't think links is the answer - recent changes will show me what has happened recently in forums and user talk pages - in fact that's one of the things I use to research articles. I haven't had the time to do anything this month, and having minimal internet access means that this situation is unlikely to change swiftly. I have to admit that I took myself off the list of deliveries because I got sick of the garbage in my talk page. Maybe delivery can become a link saying "Your latest issue of UnSignpost is available for you here" and people can navigate to it from there. After all, as it is usually hidden by default users won't read it unless they choose to. But monthly seems to be the only sustainable way to keep this going.                               Puppy's talk page00:40, June 5, 2009 Friday, 07:02, May 28 2010 UTC
It would seem to me that getting a real base of writers for it would be key. I've done it a few times, and it was fairly time consuming. Getting a few people working on it at once is helpful. But the real issue is that this site goes through slow months (usually when half the user-base is busy with schoolwork). When that happens, there is less time for the people left to write for the paper. But I can't really talk. I'm one of those dicks who only has time to be on here during the summer and winter months. Well, now that I am graduated, and jobless, that may change. In summary: What UU said. Woody On Fire! Wood burning.gifTalking Woody Stalking Woody 04:44, June 8, 2010 (UTC)

Anniversary issue and stuff

Ironically, or actually very fittingly, the next issue was supposed to be the anniversary issue. It'll be a fitting occasion to make some fundamental changes to the UnSignpost. Also, yes, changing it to a monthly periodical is probably the most practical thing to do. Additionally, you don't have to worry about the delivery, I'll deliver it if Dexter doesn't beat me to it. But if someone wants to create a bot, all you need to do is download the AutoWikiBrowser. It's supposed to be rather easy, though I only got error messages when I tried it out. And finally, just posting a link to the UnSignpost (possibly with some special formatting) on people's talkpages is an excellent proposition. Yeah, if someone wishes to revive it, I'd be more than happy to deliver it. Delievering it hasn't been an issue when Socky and I are on. The issue stems from no one writing it. MegaPleb Dexter111344 Complain here 02:54, June 8, 2010 (UTC)
Getting there... Expected to have nets back by now. My ISP is not going to be my ISP not much longer.                               Puppy's talk page00:40, June 5, 2009 Tuesday, 04:24, Jun 8 2010 UTC

Links

Please no. Making the Unsignpost a set of links kills its purpose- to be funny. I really like those little stories, and they actually make me laugh. Also, I like the newspaper format, but I'm alone there, I guess.--Sir HELPME Talk (more? --> CUN ROTM NOTM Pleb USS Pees SK ) On Wednesday, 09:34, June 02 2010 UTC

So, I still have limited nets, but in short
  • Monthly periodical
  • Keep the newspaper feel, but adjust format to remove the need for filler
  • Celebrate changes with a 2th anniversary edition
  • Keep it as stories rather than a collection of links
  • Socky is willing to aid in delivery
Actually, I'm beginning to think rather than a delivery maybe it could be changed to a template on the user's page, and be something along the lines of "The latest issue of USP is available, click here". It removes that issue completely. I'll keep thinking about that one. Maybe a box on the right under the tools section that has an ad for it or something that can be changed when a new issue is released. A mock magazine cover? I'll get back to that.
I think that resolves most of the issues really. Unless someone has another idea we can incorporate, I'll try and have next issue ready by the weekend. (It wouldn't be a traditional USP if it were on time.)                               Puppy's talk page00:40, June 5, 2009 Thursday, 01:27, Jun 3 2010 UTC
