Deletion list is here (updated hourly)
Net article deletion: -4521

The week-long tagging procedure has concluded and the huffing may now begin. Administrators are encouraged to use this list for huffing; it lists only expired FFW tags and orders them by who tagged them, so that special attention might be paid to more questionable taggers, and also to prevent one from huffing the same article one has tagged. If you do, by whatever accident, huff an article you have tagged yourself, Fnoodle will automatically restore it.

I've created a separate forum - namely, this one - to reflect on how FFW went. And how it went, I think, was pretty well. I judge that not by the number of articles saved or by those deleted but by how often everyone was at each others' throats, and it was far less than I expected, though it certainly shows room for improvement, particularly towards the end.

FFW hasn't happened for five years, so its results were certainly not easily predicted. A few issues cropped up throughout the week, as issues are liable to do, and I think they warrant discussion before we even consider another FFW.

  • Issues regarding tagging:
    • Certain users were a bit overzealous in terms of tagging articles for {{FFW}}. Instances of abuse included, but not limited to (cuz I just know I'll find more as I start progressing through the list): tagging articles recently saved by VFD; tagging things that weren't articles; tagging articles that were very clearly not deletion material. FFW is not "push your personal agenda" week.
  • Issues regarding untagging:
    • On the other hand, certain users also went overboard when it came to rushing to save articles from the flames. There are far more anti-abuse systems in FFW than there were five years ago - any user can save an article by moving it to their userspace and debate about it later, all articles had a seven-day timer instead of the more traditional zero-day timer, and of course VFD was opened up as an option for dispute resolution. (Although those systems can be heavily improved; see below.) For some people, this wasn't entirely enough for them, and there were a few questionable removals along the way.
  • Improvements made along the way:
    • A long, thoughtful discussion between Socky and I on IRC gave birth to yet another level of anti-abuse - the one I mentioned earlier about admins not being able to huff the articles they'd tagged. That way at least two people agree an article is crap before it goes the way of the dodo.
  • Improvements that will be made before this ever happens again:
    • Instead of the system where, when a tag needs removin', a user has to discuss it with the tagger or nominate the article for VFD (which can get rude responses, clog up VFD, and besides it's not entirely what VFD is for), a page will be made where anyone can nominate a page they want the tag removed from, and three keep votes will be enough to keep it. I can see that system potentially getting abused as well, but I would hope the fact that it's out in the open would discourage people from spamming that with keep votes. (credit where it's due: this one was all Socky.)
    • The FFW "high scores" chart - so called "high scores" in a facetious manner, mind - was created to solve the problem of tag fatigue, where one can spend hours reading articles and not knowing how much progress one's made. However, by the same token, it currently gives no feedback whatsoever for bad taggers when their tags have been removed; I think this may be something worth implementing.
    • This one's a bit out there, but perhaps an hourly limit on tags? It would prevent both tag abuse and tag fatigue, thus benefiting both sides.

In closing, I ask everyone to remember that we have too much crap to effeciently deal with using VFD alone, so any and all suggestions for cleaning up the wiki without sacrificing too much in the way of speed (which I would argue is rather of the essence) are very much appreciated.

Flamewars below

Lets point one thing out: You yourself were one of those overzealous people...A (Ruins) 01:47, July 29, 2011 (UTC)

I read each article before tagging it, I checked the history of most of them (exceptions included articles I already knew the content of and thus weren't vandalized), and so far I've had three complaints - one of which was a mistake on my part (I confused two articles with similar titles), one of which was over original content, and one of which the author still hasn't disputed, just asked if I was going to remove it. And of course, like everyone else, all my tags are going to be reviewed by another administrator. So if you could please give me examples, I'd be more than happy to explain my logic behind each of them.  Sir Skullthumper, MD (criticize  writings  SU&W) 01:53 Jul 29, 2011

Regarding my pushing my personal agenda

I asked if:

“Am I allowed to tag half the templates, and about 20% of categories during forest fire week?”

~ User:Mnbvcxz on tagging templates and categories

The response I got was:

“If they're unused, unnecessary, or easily replaceable, go for it. A cleanup's a cleanup”

~ User:Dr. Skullthumper on answering the above question

To clarify, I then asked:

“What is your definition of "unnecessary"? My definition includes, but is not limited to, brightly colored boxes of canned "humor" and footer listcruft that doesn't categorize.”

~ User:Mnbvcxz on clarifying tagging templates and categories

The response to that query was:

“Yeah, that sounds about right to me.”
