Hoop Snake[edit]

The Hoop Snake is a rare snake found in the Everglades of South Florida noted for its unusual mating habits. It spends most of its life in the wetlands. Before a male can mate, it must activate its reproductive system by rolling along a flat surface by biting its tale and somersaulting itself like a vertical hula hoop, giving the snake its name. This stimulates gamete production. The female Hoop Snake lays its eggs in a similar fashion, however, in order to dislodge the eggs, it hops while it is rolling.

These snakes are responsible for the lines on the roads in Florida. It is not known if they are active elsewhere, but it is speculated that they are found wherever there are lines on the road.

If you encounter a Hoop Snake stay very still because when the snakes are startled they weave around the road. This leads to uneven lanes and is responsible for over 150 car accidents.
