It's called an "eszett" and, if not available (for instance, authorities disagree as to the proper capital version), should be written "ss". As such it represents a sharp S. 75.60.27.102 17:12, November 24, 2013 (UTC)

- PS--Wikipedia (and the first illustration in our article) does not spell it "Esszett" as you did originally (in which case, it would proßaßly ße spelled "eßzett"). So I have changed your comment and the name of your redirect. Spıke Ѧ 20:20 25-Nov-13
