Forum:The Google Chrome Experience
OK, it was either that the fairy godmother made me do this, or I was just curious about Google Chrome. I am normally a SeaMonkey/IE user due to my contempt towards that useless piece of garbage that kids these days call "Firefox", but since someone brought up that subject about Google Chrome some time ago, I just felt the urge to become the first confessed lab rat in this wiki and test-drive the fabled browser so I could share whatever I discovered as a result with the rest of our forum goers here.
I downloaded the installation file from the Google Chrome website via SeaMonkey and started the setup program immediately afterwards. With the whole package sized at around 500kB I was quite sure that it really contained nothing but the downloader for the actual executables and libraries, but due to my laziness I did not manage to confirm my suspicion. Anyway, the installation process was a breeze and in no time Chrome was ready for a test drive. First, of course, I was greeted with the default welcome page, which looked kind of like it had been ripped off from Opera 9, not to mention that the address bar was laid out in the same sloppy way Microsoft did with IE 7:
What I was quite impressed about Chrome, though, was its memory consumption:
Although later I found out that process was only part of the whole thing in memory, ~25MB (or the total amount of memory Chrome actually took at the time) were nonetheless a reasonable number for a web browser. Well, I then proceeded to hit our most beloved wiki, Uncyclopedia, logged in, and see if my user page would load properly:
Notice the broken images were due to an ongoing issue with Wikia's servers. Apparently, either Sannse had been dozing at the job, or someone should better now start doing something to stop Jimbo from furiously fondling a group of Bomis babes while sitting on a keyboard. Anyway, I did the same thing with my talk page, and it looked superb even with that tricky style thing that I had done previously with the title:
Even the main page was perfect... Well, almost:
Then I went to visit Eric Schmidt's enemy, Yahoo. The Australian main site looked something like this:
Of course, all these mundane tasks were just too easy for a browser to accomplish. In order to turn things up a notch, I went to YouTube. With browsers like Firefox 2, flash-based video sites can chow down your memory like the Nazis ate up Poland. Well, unless you are the sort that is interested in watching Spricket24 eating fingernails, the test material that I had was something that you, the reader, would unlikely object:
That's right - it was the TopGear official Channel! The channel's home page had a 10-minute long video featured right at the top of it, and I took advantage to the full by playing... Well, approximately 5 minutes of the whole duration due to the fact that the video was streamed over Windows Terminal Service and it was almost choppy enough to give me a seizure. The result, though, was not at all surprising:
Every browser is pretty much bounded to have memory leaks here and there, and Chrome was no exception. But when I moved away from YouTube and proceeded back to Uncyclopedia, one of the many processes that Chrome had apparently littered in memory suddenly vanished. My guess was that for plug-in things like Flash Player and Java, Chrome was smart enough to run them as a separate process so that when it was no longer needed it would simply be removed from memory along with other useless stuff that came with it.
Well, that pretty much sums up all the things I did with Chrome (aside from the fact that this post was submitted using the browser as well). Now it's time for our obligatory comments and flame wars and such. -- The Colonel (talk) 21:35, 3 February 2009 (UTC)

I love how fast chrome is, but I'll hold off on it as a main browser until I can stick all my firefox add-ons onto it. Also, if you want to measure up memory, right click on the window title bar and click "task manager". It'll tell you how much each memory it's using, even down to the individual tab. And if you click the more stats button it'll compare it to any other browsers you happen to be running at the same time. • Spang • ☃ • talk • 00:01, 04 Feb 2009

Oh yeah...the fuck is up with your taskbar? That's just gay lookin'. Fuck the taskbar in general, really. —Sir SysRq (talk) 19:41, 4 February 2009 (UTC)
- Look! You are really pushing it here. Seriously, are you drunk or something? -- The Colonel (talk) 09:05, 5 February 2009 (UTC)
- What, the taskbar is gay. My point is, why is yours on the side of the screen? Are you drunk? —Sir SysRq (talk) 15:03, 5 February 2009 (UTC)
- OK, let's say the task bar is made out of 100% pure homosexuality, but, still, is the way I place it your business? (Note for the slow: the answer is "no".) Besides, do you need to be that personal and confrontational when it comes to your anti-IE/Microsoft sentiments? There is a line between just kidding and really getting into someone's face, and I think you have just crossed it, kiddo. -- The Colonel (talk) 17:13, 5 February 2009 (UTC)
