Looks like we still need that Special:Interwiki extension...

Quite a few broken or incorrect links, this is the current status for a few wikis I'd checked:

Lithuania

Note: As noted, the lt: prefix on Wikia-hosted Uncyclopedias points not to the main project (juokopedija.org, with just under 150 pages) but to a Wikia fork of the project. I now see that the forked version is dead, or at least has a big fat "adopt this wiki" box on the front page.

If the Wikia version is dead, perhaps we should not be linking there at all? --Carlb 15:39, 10 December 2007 (UTC)

Updating

Carl, as I've said elsewhere, I don't read all forum topics so please draw my attention to any you particularly want me to read. Please don't just post and then complain that I (or Wikia) haven't reacted.

We have updated all these links several times, but things keep changing. Frankly, I'm considering whether we should limit these links to ones that I have some chance of keeping straight... the Wikia hosted ones. It's not as though your wikis all have links back to the Wikia ones, I've pointed out problems in that area more than once. I'm fully aware that you could choose to do similarly, and maybe link to your fork of Uncyclopedia instead of this one (I call it a fork rather than a mirror as it's editable)... but I wonder whether it would be worth that to have a clear interlanguage section, and to separate the differently hosted wikis. Community comment on this would be very welcome.

Carl, I understand your dislike and distrust of Wikia, but it becomes very difficult to deal with at times. I think a separation of your wikis and those hosted by Wikia might not be such a bad idea. -- sannse<staff/> (talk) 14:50, 28 January 2008 (UTC)

As far as I know, the links between the Wikia-hosted languages are just as broken - at least if one is trying to link from another Wikia. Case in point: jv: and su: cannot inter-language link to or from anything, period. It's possible to link to them from some non-Wikia, but that's about it. What's needed is some means for sysops on the individual Uncyclopedia projects to add the missing links, much like mw:Extension:SpecialInterwiki allows already for most non-Wikia versions.
The question of the links in the "in other languages" box was brought to your attention in October, when the Norwegian Ikkepedia users were raising issues about no: pointing to some old version of their wiki which had moved off Wikia in 2006. Everything that was broken then is, sadly, just as broken now.
Oddly, when cs: moved *to* Wikia in April 2006, for close to a month there was a better chance of linking to there directly from pt: than from Wikia (including pl:, ironically). Clearly, a system that requires that Wikia control the "in other languages" box _for_ us is not working and not meeting Uncyclopedia's needs.
Compare this to this and you'll see some major difference in what can (or can't) be linked properly.
It's not a major issue (as each of the individual languages operate largely independently, with the languages and interwiki links being among the very few bits tying the whole together) but it has been an ongoing problem for at least two years now. There has to be a better way.
I currently have the following as links to Wikia-hosted projects ar:ast:ca:cs:da:de:el:en:eo:es:fr:he:id:it:jv:la:pl:ru:sk:su:yi:zh: and these as non-Wikia projects bg:bn:bs:cy:et:fa:fi:got:hr:hu:ja:ko:lb:li:lt:lv:mg:mk:nl:no:pt:ro:sl:sr:sv:th:tl:tr:uk:zh-tw:. In general, if the main wiki for a language (not a fork, not an abandoned wiki for a community that has moved elsewhere) is Wikia, the interlanguage links will reflect this. However, I don't really see a need to create two separate "in other languages" boxes with links to two separate forks of Lithuania if one is dead.
Technically, it would be possible to create PHP code to build "in other languages" and "in other wikis" as two separate boxes. Wikitravel has done this. If the problem of being unable to add wikis to the interwiki table remains, however, the exercise would be a pointless one - as without a reasonably-complete set of interwiki entries there's nothing to which to link. --Carlb 15:58, 28 January 2008 (UTC)
Yes, I would like to see that solution too, with easier ways to edit the links. We have a better system at Wikia now - which means I can do them for some wikis, but "specials" like Uncyclopedia aren't on there. I will try to find time to review all the links this week. -- sannse<staff/> (talk) 21:16, 28 January 2008 (UTC)
Sigh, time... I need some! Still aware of this -- sannse<staff/> (talk) 21:57, 3 February 2008 (UTC)
I've started organising this list again at User:Sannse/table, once I have one wiki per code, in the right format, I can start rebuilding the lists -- sannse<staff/> (talk) 23:36, 17 March 2008 (UTC)
Tumbleweed.gif

Korean Uncyclopedia

Recently we've moved from Carlb's server to our own. I red User:Sannse/table, however, there's some wrong thing. First, the wiki http://sanguncy.wikia.com/wiki/ isn't related to us. It was planned as an unofficial fork, however, that's dead now. Also, there are several URLs linked to ko:, and now it's time to unify them.

So, please ignore about the http://sanguncy.wikia.com/wiki/, because it's dead and unofficial fork. And we'll use uncyclopedia.kr as primary address, leaving the other addresses to just a link. --Peremen 01:28, 19 March 2008 (UTC)

OK -- sannse<staff/> (talk) 23:01, 20 March 2008 (UTC)

Norwegian

I recommend linking no, nb and nn to Ikkepedia.org, as ikkepedia.wikia.com is dead. There's also no difference in the dialects used in the two projects, so only using no: would be enough for linking to norwegian projects, and less confusing. --Trubadurix 00:04, 20 March 2008 (UTC)

Done on this one too - sannse<staff/> (talk) 23:01, 20 March 2008 (UTC)

Swedish, Turkish et al.

Of the others, the status appears to be:

bn: http://bikosh.wikia.com/wiki/$1 http://bn.uncyc.org/wiki/$1 Wikia version is empty, yet our interwiki links here uselessly point to that version instead of a non-blank version elsewhere. I have no idea why this was done. (carl)
Looks like it was because the Wikia version was made back in September 07 and the other this January. The Wikia one was never taken up by the founder and has no pages. The other has 10 pages (are they just headings? I really wish I could read all languages). Both look inactive on RC, although bn.uncyc has a couple of recent bot edits. -- sannse
lt: http://nesamopedija.wikia.com/wiki/$1 http://juokopedija.org/wiki/$1 Wikia's fork of Lithuanian is abandoned and contains very little, not even a main page. (carl)
Looks like the juokopedija.org version is older, has more pages, and is more active than the wikia version -- sannse.
sv: http://psyklopedin.wikia.com/wiki/$1 http://psyklopedin.org/wiki/$1 There are multiple abandoned old versions of this wiki, including Wikia's; http://wikiindex.org/Psyklopedin has a full list. (carl)
This one is linked to psyklopedin.org -- sannse
tr: http://yaransiklopedi.wikia.com/wiki/$1 http://yansiklopedi.org/wiki/$1 Very little of anything on Yaransiklopedi, and much of what is there was cut-and-paste from Yansiklopedi. Not active. (carl)
Or possibly vice versa... it looks like the Wikia one was started first. But it's less active and has less pages. I would like to give the Wikia one the chance to be reactivated... but as the community seems to be over at yansiklopedi.org .... -- sannse
uk: http://duropedia.wikia.com/wiki/$1 http://inciklopedia.org/wiki/$1 Wikia version contains two pages; one is an external link back to en:, the other is an unattributed cut-and-paste of Інциклопедія's main page. Nothing else there.
cy: http://celwyddoniadur.wikia.com/wiki/$1 http://cy.uncyclopedia.org.uk/wiki/$1 Wikia version is empty.

Some of these are active in their non-Wikia incarnations, so perhaps someone familiar with the projects should comment on their status? In some cases, I'd suspect the abandoned and empty versions should simply be closed - but that is a question for the communities to address. Having never learned a foreign language, I'm at a wee bit of a disadvantage in dealing with these. --Carlb 20:31, 20 March 2008 (UTC)

Admin for the swedish project Smiddle has responded here. The front page on psyklopedin.wikia.com says that http://psyklopedin.org/ is the real swedish project. I'm not an expert on the Swedish project, though. --Trubadurix 20:57, 20 March 2008 (UTC)
I've replied to him there -- sannse<staff/> (talk) 23:01, 20 March 2008 (UTC)

Two left for me to look at... gotta go do some other work, so will check them out later -- sannse<staff/> (talk) 00:18, 21 March 2008 (UTC)

The valid version of Ukrainian uncyclopedia is [1] --193.108.44.30 07:50, 23 March 2008 (UTC) Admin of inciklopedia

OK, that's fixed on the list.

That's all resolved, will post the final (?) table below -- sannse<staff/> (talk) 18:27, 25 March 2008 (UTC)

Question

Can I just confirm that all these off-wikia wikis will be linking back to this version and the other Wikia wikis on the list? In particular those where I will be unlisting a Wikia wiki in favour of one hosted elsewhere, because they have asked here for that to be done. Thanks -- sannse<staff/> (talk) 12:27, 25 March 2008 (UTC)

I currently have the following as links to Wikia-hosted projects ar:ast:ca:cs:da:de:el:en:eo:es:fr:he:id:it:jv:la:pl:ru:sk:su:yi:zh:

I do not have these as Wikia:

 • bn:cy:: Wikia versions of both of these are empty
 • tr:: The admin there (Assyrius) reports yansiklopedi.org as the correct version, as Wikia's version shows no activity and one-tenth the pagecount. Yaransiklopedi's recent changes show only one page edited in the last thirty days; that one by a single anon-IP removing content. [2]
 • ko:lt:no:ro:sv: have already been addressed above; no: in particular has been asking since at least 2007 that their abandoned-since-2006 Wikia be closed, so far without success.

Currently, this means that most (all) non-Wikia are linking to some Wikia-hosted versions (such as id: jv: sk: su:) which do not link back. For instance, link to en: from bn.uncyc.org and arrive here, try to link back to bn: from here and end up on a completely empty wikia, with not a byte of data to be found anywhere. --Carlb 14:25, 25 March 2008 (UTC)

I can make sure that our interwiki table at Ikkepedia.org is up to date. --Trubadurix 15:47, 25 March 2008 (UTC)
Thanks both
Carl, the problem with not linking those 'empty' ones, is that it takes away an opportunity for them to become active. which is a bit sad if they might otherwise start up. But in the ones you mention above, I think all are now agreed as linking to those you host (although I think at least one of those is actually both newer and as unpopulated as the Wikia one). One thing I would say, is that just having the links is one thing, but please consider making sure the front pages actually show the links - I will do the same for all Wikia hosted ones (as long as the community accepts that of course). One final plea... maybe these URLs can remain stable now? Some have had an awful lot of changes, hence the no-uptodate-ness of our list. Thanks for working with me on this list, having started to update them manually, I may try and get technical help to do it in a batch, otherwise I'm going to be cutting and pasting for days! (sannse)
The list appears to be correct now. Thanks. As far as I know, the links on the front pages just need to be cut-and-pasted manually - the 'bots that busily post endless interwiki links onto ten thousand other pages seem to leave anything named "main page" (in any language) alone.
I think the non-Wikia mostly have their own individual domains now, so if they move servers the addresses should stay the same. Unfortunately (or fortunately) the main problem in keeping this list up-to-date is the creation of new wikis in various obscure and faraway languages. I think Basa Java (1 page) and Basa Sunda (3 pages) were the most recent, which makes fifty languages (in total) with their own wikis. That gives: <!-- Actual Uncycs --> ar:ast:bg:bn:bs:ca:cs:cy:da:de:el:en:eo:es:et: fa:fi:fr:got:he:hr:hu:id:it:ja:jv:ko:la:lb:li:lt: lv:mg:mk:nl:no:pl:pt:ro:ru:sl:sk:sr:su:sv:th:tl: tr:uk:yi:zh-tw:zh-hk:zh: <!-- en.uncyc Babel pages --> ang:nap:simple:vi:
There are various lists (the robot configurations, the list of wikis for generating the pagecount template, the lists from the Special:Interwiki pages) which somehow have managed to remain updated using various tools, but on average more than sixteen new languages are added to Uncyclopedia every year. Hopefully, if an existing language moves, the old URL's will at least point somewhere sensible? --Carlb 19:23, 25 March 2008 (UTC)
We don't link off Wikia when a wiki closes here, the wiki no longer exists on Wikia, so the pages will point to our page indicating that. We are always happy to host a language, even an obscure one, if someone wants to try starting it... so I count that one as a "fortunately" :)
I've just updated the whole set of links for Beidipedia. Our system takes a while for the changes to propagate, it will happen automatically within the next 24 hours. If that looks OK once it's live, then I'll ask one of our technical team to copy the list to the other Wikia wikis. Otherwise it will mean me pasting each link in turn to 21 wikis... bah :) -- sannse<staff/> (talk) 19:46, 25 March 2008 (UTC)
Looks like cy:su:tl:uk: are still red here on en: and a few of the others still point to the wrong projects; I'm also a little unsure about la: in that the link works but the project name on the front page "Necyclopædia" doesn't match the project name in any of the URL's "Uncapaedia". Is there any plan for Wikia to create a "necyclopaedia" URL which could be linked for that project (it doesn't exist under that name now - no such Wikia), or is la: best left as-is? --Carlb 11:25, 1 April 2008 (UTC)
