Since the changeover to our new Main Page, I've been noticing time and again that the vast majority of Featured Image captions are too small for the new format. I've been doing a little thinking about how to fix this and I think the best solution is to put the captions in a separate unprotected page and put an "edit caption" link on the front page. --Sir gwax (talk) Signuke.gif 21:46, 27 March 2006 (UTC)

We could also have a one time vote for new captions page. Or maybe just a work on captions page. ---Quill.gifRev. Isra (talk) 22:54, 27 March 2006 (UTC)
I agree with gwax, and probably with Isra... despite the fact that i didn't understand a word he said. It's been hard for me to nominate images on VFP, I see a really good one, but then I can't think of a good enough caption to go along with it. not only would this provide an adequately lengthed caption for each featured image, but it'd also help lower the pressure on potential nominators. Having a page for people to suggest/vote on captions is way to bureaucratic and doesn't provide any advantage over direct editting beyond requiring people to revert once in a while. --Sir gwax (talk) Signuke.gif 00:25, 28 March 2006 (UTC)
If you wanted to have them editable by anyone, you could (possibly, not sure if it would work on a choose/option) create pages like File:Imagenamehere.jpg/FPcaption and have them semi-automatically included and semi-automatically linked (eg, have a sub template of FI {{metaFI|Imagenamehere.jpg|size=150px}} with contents [[{{{1}}}|{{{size}}}|thumb|{{{{{1}}}}/FPcaption}}]]. Maybe. --Splaka 04:55, 28 March 2006 (UTC)
That's pretty much what I was thinking, but the caption would have to put it in a different place because everything in the Image: namespace gets treated as an image, even subpages. --Sir gwax (talk) Signuke.gif 17:03, 28 March 2006 (UTC)
Well, the advantage of a separate page is that we can nag our contributors to go there and work on them until they are all good. We could do both, really. Wan't me to code it? ---Quill.gifRev. Isra (talk) 06:36, 28 March 2006 (UTC)

If the problem is just that the caption is too small for the box, why not use a smaller box (one column wide instead of two) like http://uncyclopedia.org/index.php?title=Main_Page_%28editable%29&oldid=639772 ? --Carlb 12:37, 28 March 2006 (UTC)

I actually like the way that wikipedia keeps a little mini-article with their featured images and think that it could add a new level of depth to the comedy. That and it would improve the odds for really good but obscure images. --Sir gwax (talk) Signuke.gif 13:27, 28 March 2006 (UTC)
