Forum:Bloody NTL
I undid a block on 62.252.0.11 - it's a city-wide proxy for NTL (glfd-cache-8.server.ntli.net - Guildford and surrounding areas), the UK's second-biggest ISP and only cable ISP. They transparent-proxy everyone to proxies for 100k people each. We had endless hair-tearing on Wikipedia over this problem. They eventually wrote a buttload of special-case code to decode NTL's fucked-up versions of the X-Forwarded-From: header. I'll be filing a Wikia bug asking them to do whatever it was Wikipedia did, which Angela says no-one will get to before Xmess ;-) In the meantime, if it's in the NTL proxy range, what we did on Wikipedia was make blocks just long enough for the vandal to get bored and go away, e.g. 15 minutes - David Gerard 14:50, 24 December 2006 (UTC)
There is an easy(ish) ways to work around this problem if you are on NTL and your local proxy gets blocked... you can actually use any of their city wide proxies so just set it manually in your browser and your good to go.

I've not tried it but since telewest and ntl have now merged you might be able to use the blueyonder ones too. (same page just scroll down a bit) --Tt22 Talk 17:14, 28 December 2006 (UTC)
- Thanks for this - I was banned under 62.253.128.15, but have fixed it by switching to a different Proxy.
- But a curious thing is that when I was banned as an anonymous IP, I could not create an account (the option does not appear, and when I pasted the URL directly by looking at the equivalent on Wikipedia, it told me "To be allowed to create accounts in this Wiki you have to log in and have the appropriate permissions"). This option reappeared when I changed my proxy.
- I thought the whole point was that IP bans only affected people who weren't logged in? Otherwise someone on a dynamic IP who was banned because of someone else's vandalism would never be able to create an account, nor could they ask anyone? (I was just lucky someone had already mentioned and solved the problem I was having...) Mark. 62.253.128.14 03:59, 4 January 2007 (UTC)
- I wish that were the case. However, Uncyc runs MediaWiki 1.7, which is an older version of MediaWiki, and doesn't have the option to ban only anon users by IP. If Wikia would update the version of MediaWiki, we wouldn't have this problem (glares at Sannse), but Wikia works at all the pace of a herd of turtles in a sea of peanut butter.
