You can now upload GIMP .xcf images through the upload form. Though you can't include them in articles, having them on the wiki is waaaay useful - because rather than the finished JPEG, these are the original files people can edit in the GIMP (all the layers and so on). So if someone makes an image for you and it's almost right, anyone can fix it. Very wiki. See Image:Myownprivateseptember.xcf, which is the original file for Image:Myownprivateseptember.jpg. Download it, open it in GIMP and feel the potential.

(I asked Jason to allow these - Mediawiki forbids them by default, but Wikimedia allows .xcf and I don't think they can contain malicious content. I welcome correction if this is not the case.)

Unfortunately, it's unlikely that Photoshop files (.psd) will be allowed similarly - whereas the GIMP is completely open-source and free software and the format is completely documented, Photoshop's file format is proprietary, undocumented, secret and known only to Adobe. Poo. Although GIMP can read a lot of .psd files, so you could save originals to the wiki as .xcf that way - David Gerard 23:05, 10 March 2006 (UTC)

  • Unfortunately? It's fortunate that a proprietary format isn't allowed. - User:Guest/sig 05:50, 17 March 2006 (UTC)
