Militärparade zum Gedenken an den vierten Jahrestag der DDR. Als besonderer Gast ist Generalsekretär der KPdSU Michail Gorbatschow. This is the parade in East Berlin commemorating the 40th anniversary of the GDR. These celebrations took place during 6-7 October 1989. For the military parade special guest in attendance was Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev (who attended with reluctance, but did so in a spirit of comradery for other socialist states). This parade is highly notable because it took place during a time of great upheaval in Eastern Europe. Just a month later the Berlin wall would come down. GDR leader Erich Honecker would resign on 18 October 1989. And just shy of a year after this parade took place, Germany would celebrate its reunification.
