In the 9ties , the elaborate Y2K bug scam was set up by software houses looking to boost their sales. At the stroke of midnight, 010000JAN2000, a mysterious bug would disrupt all major computer systems unless they were properly debugged. It was proven to be a hoax on 010001JAN2001, the official beginning of the 21st century: despite the lack of precautionary measure, not a single computer system crashed. The myth had a major contribution to the notorious dotcom bubble.
